Unusual car stereo/speaker problem

Hi folks - we bought a '06 Mondeo recently and it has an unusual problem with the stereo. When we bought it, it needed a code before we could turn it on so we didn't spot it before buying.

Here's what's happening. When we 1st turned it on, the sound was coming out the passenger door only, and very quietly. Turning up to the loudest didn't seem to have any affect whatsoever. We thought it was either a problem with the speakers or speaker cabling behind the stereo maybe.

On our 1st trip in the car I left the stereo on (quietly in the background obviously) and after around 15 mins driving the stereo came on full volume with all speakers working. Great we thought, as it was most likely just loose wires or similar, but amp/speakers were all working clearly and loudly.

Since then, when we're in the car it seems to be completely intermittent. Drove this morning and it was working from the moment I left to when I stopped. Stopped for diesel then, and when I turned the car back on it was gone back to quiet.

Doesn't seem like it would be speaker cable, but any suggestions for what could be causing above?

Could still be a connection, pull out unit and have a look behind.

Thanks - I'll give it a check. I would have thought it wouldn't be a connection just because it consistently did something different after the car had been turned off and then started again. E.g. could be fine for 30 hour trip, but stop and turn off the car for 20 secs then back on and it'll be gone quiet again.

Same thing on way back from work just now. Quiet for 1st 10 minutes, then scared the living ****e out of me when it came back to proper volume.

Most likely you have an intermittent speaker or wiring fault to one of the speakers. You will need to get someone to check the impedance of each speaker and also if any one of the speaker wires age going to ground. This can all be done from the plug at the rear of the radio and will take only a couple of minutes to do.

Great stuff - and I think this might be the problem, as tapping the speaker ont he drivers side inside door fixes it temporarily :) Will test and post back here!
