    So.. if someone needed 98ron petrol, and knowing that it's not available in the republic.. what's the best additive to use.

    Your car will adjust timing to suit the quality of fuel and should run fine on 95 but with a slight loss of power.

    They do and they don't, they have protection where they pull timing to stop knock but this one goes so far. If it's knocking and pulling the full 12 degree it can then it's bye bye engine

    If it's a modern car it will no doubt be fine. Read what it says in the manual.
    My car should be run on 98 but it's fine on 95.

    Not on high performance. A typical mk6 gti remapped will pull 10 degrees of timing on 95 and they only go to 12 so it's a dangerous game. For a normal car grand no bother but high power turbocharged is asking for trouble

    Mine runs fine and even made above factory figures, 310bhp all while running on 95. A car can be remapped to make good power on 95. It's a vw too.

    My other car made more than factory power on a bog standard engine with 180k miles, all on 95 octane too.

    What I'm saying is a standard modern car will run fine on 95, most owners manuals will state that performance will be slightly reduced if the car is run on lower octane fuel.

    Can you use the performance on the road though? I've got a powerful car and it's rare that it gets anywhere near to using its power and that's only for a few seconds to get to roughly the speed limit.

    The only thing done to map for 95 is retard the base timing so you get less knock but its safe and gives you your full 12 or so degrees for safety, you always lose hp and torque though.

    Don't get me wrong many cars handle it ok but I just have seen a few disasters from people blindly relying on the limited range of adjustment the ecu has to save their engine. It doesn't have a 'Oh i'm on 95 now mode' it has a oh sh!t knocking detected retard the ignition mode :pac:

    And Yes Del I use it every day :)
