    Hi All,

I am fairly noob to the car world but need to get a car sooner then I had planned and am open to suggestions.

24 male with a short commute and occasional distance journeys ( a few hours 1-2 per week max).

I'm open to any and all suggestions. Hopefully something that doesn't rape me in insurance.

Cars I am considering so far:

    Ford Focus
    Hyundai I30
    Vauxhall Astra
    VW Golf

Any and all suggestions would be loved I hear your the go to place for cars! Also if any of the above have warning signs to watch out for timing belt issues etc etc I'd appreciate the help.

Sounds like a petrol car would suit your needs better than a diesel. In 1.4 litre petrol form the Hyundai i30 would be the most powerful on that list and probably the most reliable too. Both Focus and Golf in 1.4 litre petrol form are under powered and tend to cost more to tax on the newer motor tax system. Vauxhall/Opel Astra petrols of that era are nothing to write home about for reliability either.

I'd add the Kia Ceed to the list too, underneath it's got identical mechanics to the Hyundai i30 but they tend to cost a bit less to buy and there tends to be more higher spec models about. The Honda Civic is another to look at, 1.4 is a bit dead but it's a reliable engine. 1.8 is a much better option but check insurance as it might bump up your premium.
