IBS - Type Symptoms - Diagnosis Complete

    Hi all,

    I've posted a bit in this area typically in IBS threads. I've had these issues for about 10 months now and I was very sceptical about it being IBS as I didn't have half of the symptoms or any of the classical bowel issues, my dietician didn't agree that was it either.

    So, I changed GP to a local one and the GP did a blood test for coeliac disease - serious issues with gluten - and it was very positive! So I've just begun a gluten-free diet. This may not be your case but worth the simple blood test. 1 in 100 people have it and it's heavily undiagnosed.

    I know 2 people in the extended family who had serious gut trouble and they had different things;

    Person 1: Some bacterial infection, something pylori and a hiatius hernia
    Person 2: 'A lazy bowel'
    Me: Coeliac disease

    So, the field is wide open. In my experience blood and urine tests have been the best at identifying things.

    I hope this helps people. Any questions, ask away.

    What symptoms were presenting, if you dont mind me asking?

    Sure.

    - distention (actually enlarged stomach, not just bloating) this is regular and hasn't gone away in 10 months, only a minor ebb and flow
    - some nausea many months ago after eating, but this has gone
    - occasional lethargy, like you just ate a Christmas dinner - after many meals
    - variable appetite but generally weaker and inconsistent
    - it affects mood, because, when I have good days, my energy and positivity shoots through the roof

    Hi, I just wanted to add a quick follow up note, as I've met with a gastroenterologist and the head of the GI unit. I pointed out that all of the GPs I saw in Ireland in the past year said I had IBS and more than one basically inferred that I was simply looking for bigger problems where there was none. The GI and his boss saw my blood test results for coeliac disease and while they're proceding with an endoscopy, they've confirmed it really is coeliac disease. They were horified by the way GPs treated this on the path of diagnosis. I'd say even if you've been told you've IBS, it doesn't do any harm to get the blood test to check for ceoliac disease. I would never have imagined I'd be in the 1%.

    Mod note - closing this thread as it's a duplicate of the main thread, glad you got the diagnosis
