Ext Alarm Cable Cut

    Hi Guys,

I recently got one of those folding stairs installed in the attic. While the carpenter was doing the install he managed to accidentally fire a nail through one of the alarm wires.

The alarm is going off now intermittently and showing a Ext Bell Tamper message on the keypad.

Would it be safe to do a clean cut of the cable and re-join using block cable connectors?

Would I need to power down the system before attempting this?

    Thanks a million..

Yes power it down or disconnect the bell cable at the panel to prevent it from blowing fuses.

Thanks.. Woulds it matter if the bell cable is 4 core and I use 6 core to repair the break?

Sorry, I've another question. If I disconnect the cables at the control panel will the external a bell keep ringing until I have the repair done or will it stay off? Just worried I'm going to drive the neighbors mad.

It will ring for 15-20 minutes or untill its reconnected. Whichever is quickest.

Sorry guys but I need a bit a help. The alarm kept going off last night with the Ext. Bell Tamper message. The neighbours are going to be seriously fed up with me. Is there any way I can just switch off the whole thing until I fix it or have a professional come down and look at it?

    Yes
Power it down completely. Remove the mains fuse and disconnect the battery.

Thanks a million.. Would it have to be reprogrammed once the power is restored?

To be honest you would probably be better off just putting a block connector on the damaged cable and fixing the problem rather than causing other issues in the system.

Thanks for all your help, I'm going to give this a go..i've switch off the power to the panel from the fuse box and have the panel open. i think I'm looking in the right place but not sure which wire to disconnect, I'm thinking Red or black would do it?

No need to touch the terminal board, if the mains is off then just remove ONE cable from the battery, preferably the positive (red) one. They are 1/4 inch push on spade connectors.

Ok, got you.. im just worried that if i power down completely I'll end up having to reprogramme the alarm. I dont have the engineers code or manual so i might make a complete balls of..

Ok, job done.. Alarm power restored and all faults have cleared so fingers crossed thats it fixed.

Thank you to everyone who replied! You were a great help.

I've attached a picture of the offending section that was causing the problem.. cheers.

    External Bell +will suffice.
No reprogramming should be necessary. To be safe make sure the link Lk1 remains in place.
