    Hi,

I'm travelling from Cork to Dublin on Sunday, hopefully by train. However, the 8.20 and 10.20 are both sold out, and I'll need to get one of these. I vaguely remember being in this situation before but was allowed board the train and sit in the back, unreserved carriage. Is this still the case? Surely if I get a valid ticket on the day I won't be denied boarding?

That's correct. It means that the online allocation has sold out. You might get a seat in coach G (if it's a Mark 4 set), otherwise you'd have to stand. You won't be denied boarding anyway.

There is sold out online, and sold out entirely - if its the latter the website will tell you as such and this is normally only done on specials.

Those are normal services and you should be able to get on - seat not guaranteed - with a walk up ticket.

You could also try the GoBE or Airocach coach services to Dublin.

I'm sure you've considered this but walk-up tickets on the Dublin/Cork route can be really expensive. You'd probably save a lot of money going on the bus.

Hold off for a few days however if you cannot get a ticket online then don't turn up as Kerry GAA are playing. They have a note saying nothing at the station.

They are supposed to be running the Tralee connection to Dublin which might free up seats on the 08.20 in the next few days.

A note saying nothing at the station? I'm aware of the Kerry football match but surely Irish rail are going to consider the fact that some Cork people are still going to need to avail of the service regardless of the match..

Check out how much a flexible ticket costs for the later trains and travel on the earlier ones. Your seat will only be allocated on the service you select but you can travel on the earlier train.

They were not guaranteeing travel for Semi Flex or Flex tickets but I suspect you probally would of gotten on but not an issue as they opened reservations again.
Public notice: Tickets will be only available online

Please note tickets will not be available at the station for this service. Due to the GAA event taking place in Croke Park services are extremely busy and tickets are only available online. Customers who have purchased a Semi Flexible or Flexible ticket are urged to travel on the service they are booked for to guarantee travel.

You'd get on alright. If they can't guarantee you travel with the semi or flexi option then they should only sell the non flexi option for that day. Translink made a hash with the specials for the Tyrone game the other week, they just loaded the trains and let them go when they were full. People couldn't get on the service they were booked on because of either the train had gone early or that people for later trains were let on any service.
Point being, if there is standing room then you will get on.
