I have my car in for service with the Hyundai dealership and it is likely I will need 4 new tyres. Should I go with the ones they suggest to me and have them fit them today, likely to cost 4 *200? Or would I be better off shopping around and getting someone else to fit- would there be much savings to be made this way or should I just suck it up?

    200 per tyre?

Unless there is some very specific requirement for that car, 200 is very expensive.

Ditto, on the other hand 200 for 4 is too cheap lol

My post inspired me to call a tyre place- they quoted 130. 200 was the price the dealership charged the wife last time round, she knows more about cars than me but is not as frugal

What size are they? What brand did the tyre place quote for? The garage?

the OE on ix35 would normally be hankook or lately nexin. €135ish for the hankook is the going rate. IMO you would be better off going to an ITIA licenced tyre centre most aren't out to screw you.

    Where are you based?

    What's the size?

You'll beat that by 20 quid a tyre I'd say.

Don't buy tyres off main dealers as they charge a fortune for them. €200 for a tyre on a ix35 is a joke. Local tyre centres are way more competitive.

Due to collect car this evening and they haven't said anything about the tyres so I might be alright for another while but thanks for the advice.

Had to get new brake pads though I knew that was coming

Never buy Tyres from a main dealer.

They will just drop your car down to the local tyre dealer, and pick it back up, and charge a hefty charge for the giving them the privilege to do so.

Get your car serviced, and if they tell you that you need new tyres, just go to your local tyre place, and get a price. I guarantee that it will be cheaper than allowing the main dealer to change the tyres.

My dealer told me that i needed 4 tyres... i didnt. I got another 6 months outta them before a bulge appeared on one, them i changed two. But there was still thread left on them (2mm).

The front are circa 2/3mm, I'll change them when its gets frosty.

Ah I don't know. I wouldn't say never buy tyres from a dealer.

The last few main dealers I've worked for actively quote for popular brands and sizes with the major tyre chains, advance and the likes to make sure the prices are competitive.

The biggest "problem" is we'll price a 205/55/16 Bridgestone Turanza with some local competitors to find they are say €90 each supplied and fitted incl. VAT and then make sure our supplier can sell us Turanzas cheap enough for us to retail @ €90 to stay competitive relative to local tyre fitters.

Then you'll go to the tyre fitter and he'll tell you you don't need a Turnaza, that a Linglong Ditchfiner Plus will do and they are only €55 a tyre. Then the dealer are the bad ones, but you'll find main dealers much less likely to fit ditch finders.

In my experience, non "car people" will just price a tyre size, never brand etc and when you are pricing size only, you can find indefinite suppliers peddling indefinitely cheaper crap.

Not saying that this is the case in the OP but it's a very popular trend.

But if you're clued in you 'll go to the local tyre shop and get a pirelli ditch doger, and pay a pretty penny, but still less than what the main stealer will charge

I understand that may be your belief, I'm just saying that that may not always be the case.

    Toyotafanboi

I get what your saying regards people only pricing round tyres with no regard for quality but this effects everyone not only dealers, I always try to suggest a good value middle range tyre (eg firestone, toyo, uniroyal etc)to our workshop customers but its like banging your head against a brick wall people in general only have regard for cost not value.

Lots of vag group dealers fitting mohawks which I wouldn't consider in any way of a premium brand , that year IX would have had hankooks from the factory so you wouldn't expect the dealer to be using another premium brand other than the hankooks which the op has pointed out he has got quoted significantly lower

I did work experience in a Hyundai dealer last year and they had a tyre machine, etc, remember fitting two Hankooks to an ix35 :D

Since when is Hankook a premium brand? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,358 ✭✭✭jimbis

Hankooks would be on the higher side of a mid range tyre scale though. And can still be got at a decent price.

It's OE fitment on Hyundais, being Korean too.
They're usually a very good tyre
