Advice 0n updating pine table

I am ok with painting the base/legs of the table which were previously spray painted. The top was sanded and varnished by the spray painter but it was darker than I wanted. Anyway the table top is marked from kids with pens and forks etc and I don't know if it's worth the effort to sand it and revarnish. I thought if I could buy a nice piece of timber ideally a little longer than the current 6ft it would work.

Any advice on where to get this cheap and would it work?
