Mysterious Gas Usage

    Howdy,

We bought a place this year, it's not occupied yet (waiting for architects/builders/etc.).

There's mains gas to the place, and it goes to the boiler in the garage, which we turned off. There's also a gas line going through the garage wall to the main house, which I'm not sure the destination of -- my guess is there used to be a gas fire in the front room that got taken out. Kitchen is all electric, and in a different direction anyway.

Now the mystery part -- we're still getting substantial gas bills, even though the boiler's turned off. I'm assuming we'd know all about it if there was a gas leak under the floor, but what else can I check? Is it possible to turn the gas off at the meter in the meantime?

Who would I call to take a diagnostic look at this?

Yes, definitely turn off the supply at the meter, there should be a valve in the meter cabinet. You might need a key to get to the meter, you can get them in most hardware stores.

You will need a registered gas installer (RGI) to check the installation for leaks / safety. You can find a local one here

Unless you are planning to replace it anyway, ask the RGI to service the boiler when he is onsite, one less thing to worry about when you move in.

Did you take a note of the gas meter reading when you moved in. If not, take the reading on the meter (take a picture of it as well) and compare it to the readings on your gas bill.
You may be receiving estimated readings based on previous owners usage.
Also, as suggested above, it would be prudent to have the system safety checked and supply shut off until you are ready to use it.

    Cheers,

The meter readings are definitely real and verified (the estimated readings are actually less than the actual ones).

Will turn off at the mains (probably should have done this anyway) and leave it for renovations, stuff is most likely getting ripped out in any case.

You also pay meter rental / standing charge, whether you used any gas or not.

How much was the bill for ?
