Ordering doors

I am looking to replace a window in my back wall with a glass slider door. As most window companies have a lead time of weeks what is the norm for ordering when you are modifying an existing property?

Do you get the builder to make the opening, then the window company come out to measure, and the door is delivered and fitted weeks later?

Or do you order the window based on the builder making the opening to a specified width? Then builder makes the opening a few days before door is due to arrive, and window company come and fit.

The second approach seems like the most logical, but I remember reading before that some window companies will not produce a door until they can get to measure the actual opening.

Every window company have different operational methods. I don't see why some window companies insist on the opening being made first, all they have to do is get the client to sign an agreement that they pay x amount extra if the opening isn't to the correct dimensions as they have specified on the order form. It's not rocket science to have a consaw with them to make adjustments if necessary or just walk away until the opening has been made correctly and collect the extra payment!
