Sounds like possibly the AC clutch, could be lack of use has brought it on. Do you know is the AC working properly only for the noise? Does the noise go after say a half hour drive?

AC clutch could be about €200 plus to fit and replace.

Was the garage owners personal car . He said he never used the AC. It was working apart from noise. Yes noticed it stopped after a while, however when I started car without moving the noise started again

It is recommended that you use aircon every couple of weeks to keep seals lubricated. Dry seals might be the issue if previous owner never used it.

I recommend that you get system charged at a specialist - abut EUR 50. They will be able to check if system is holding pressure etc. Should also be able to advise if it is a clutch issue.

No point charging a system that's charged. Most modern systems have a low pressure sensor that will prevent the ac compressor from working via its magnetic clutch to prevent any damage.

Sounds like OP air con compressor need attention
