Mystery tree

My dad was telling me that some very mature trees near where he lives had been felled - he was pretty disappointed about it as he reckoned they could have been up to 150 years old, from the size of them.  He usually knows his stuff but there was one he couldn't identify - I said to send me a couple of pics of the foliage before it drops off, but I'm no wiser.  Anyone able to shed some light?

In case the pics aren't appearing for anyone else, here's a different upload (I only see them when I go to edit the post ...)

Holm Oak, maybe? What are the undersides of the leaves like?

Agreeing on Holm Oak though I know it as "holly-oak"

There was a fashion for these in the late 19th century. The leaves look right...a rather drab, dark tree. Doesn't grow hugely tall.
Might be good firewood, -- small consolation, I know.

Another +1 on Holm Oak, Quercus ilex, excellent firewood, the timber is very dense.
