Paint or Stain Laminate Stairs?

    Looking for any suggestions as to stain/varnish or paint laminate stairs, doing steps only the riser is painted white, had them covered previously with carpet, have it sanded but there are strips of some kind of adhesive on the steps which was used to glue the carpet, any product to shift that off it?
    I see a lot of stairs are painted white, that would be out for this house, I see grey also but once you paint there is no going back, grey is in at the moment big time but trends change,

    Wondering would the wood effect work on the MDF? I think the wood is stronger version than MDF but wouldn't know the name, could it be medite? By the way its a bull nose step
    Any comments or suggestions appreciated

    Thanks in advance:rolleyes::rolleyes:

    MDF threads painted. It'll be a nightmare. New carpet on them perhaps ?
