The latest version of the Leap Top up App has been released:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ie.leapcard.tnfc
We've made changes to allow users open and read payment verification codes which some payment card providers send via text message. Users can now switch between apps to read and enter this code and complete the payment process.

This version also introduces a capping information screen that allows users to check how close they are to reaching the daily and weekly travel-cap values. For more information on capping, visit LeapCard.ie

Currently blocked by iOS not allowing access to the NFC chip to update the card. Apple Pay is irrelevant to this, in the same way that Android Pay has nothing to do with the Android app. iOS11 may allow more general use of NFC which could be the first step to an app, but still only in beta, and its not clear that it will grant the access/usage required.

As I understand NFC support in IOS is very limited and restricted, and it wouldn't be possible at the moment to do this although changes are coming in IOS 11 in this regard.

Question about capping. Most weeks I use bus only so the 27 quid Dublin Bus weekly cap applies. Last few weeks (69) bus closest to my work I get home has been full a few times in the evenings (tourists staying hotels and campsite in Clondalkin and new apartments at Clancy Barracks seems to be the issue for increased passenger numbers) and just drives past the stop, so I've had to get the Luas one stop to catch second choice bus (13) at James Hospital. Because I've used the Luas, does the 27 quid bus cap stop and only cap available to me is the €40 multi-mode cap?

no, it is still bus cap, counts all journeys on bus only, if you use other mode does not count toward cap but you can still get that cap
