Just heard this on Newstalk. Anyone else hear it?

Utter tripe. Basically trying to frighten people off going to the UK to get a car due to all the pitfalls, including losing the paperwork!
Amazingly though, they say if they don't have the car you're looking for, they'll source it for you!

    Bolleaux.

no problems with UK cars better specs and miles better looked after

Many garages will have contacts in other garages. I'd presume msl will have regular contact with joe duffy.

So if msl don't have what you want, they can check with Joe duffy or other contacts.

For a used car, unless the savings were substantial, I'd stick with local garage.

Specs - yes better in many cases, but would not agree with the "better looked after" - that was true when potholes were the norm over here and people didn't service cars. I don't think that applies to vast majority of cars anymore.

You also have many dealers bringing in bulk lots of cars from the uk (including the big dealers) - again unless the savings are substantial, my preference would be to buy locally.

I'm not in the market for at least a year or two anyway.

Second hand cars do have some issues.

I bought a BMW from a main dealer in the U.K. with a one year warranty. ABS lights came on and it was sorted under warranty with no hassle by Frank Keane in Dublin.

If buying in the U.K., try and purchase from a main dealer and the warranty will stand in Ireland.

I remember reading that uk merc dealers were not selling to Irish customers for export.

I'd say that's more the exception than the rule though.

Roads are salted much more frequently and for much longer in many parts of the uk compared to here so there is much more potential for rust on uk cars(especially from the midland up) compared to irish cars.

BMW Ireland and BMW UK are the same distributor so that's why the warranty is honoured here.

I wonder how long it will take for the government to capitulate to the no doubt intensive lobbying SIMI are doing to curtail UK imports?
They usually get what they want. Change the reg plate system? No problem.
Change it again, to reflect 2 halves of the year? No problem.
The car importing business (we don't have a motor industry) here, is in the same bracket as the vintners when it comes to getting what they want.

It won't be a problem when Britain officially leaves the EU in less than 2 years as you'll have to pay VAT/import duty on used cars from the UK as well as VRT making them too expensive.

What kinda percentage will VAT + import duty be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

VAT is currently at 23%, not sure what the rate is for import duty.

Be in no doubt there will be duty on uk cars. There's already been meetings

A bit of searching leads me to believe its 10%. Is that right does anyone know?

I don't think any simi dealer has any issue with imports - Basically every car on the market here is imported.

I'd say there's not a dealer in the country that is not importing used cars for resale themselves. There are even specialist agents who broker the deals - there's one ex dealer principal of a major marque who left his well paid job to do exactly this as he has extensive experience in the UK too.

I would guess that the majority of UK imports are bulk imports by dealers.

I have been buying UK cars and vans for the past 20 years bought car and van this year through Lex Auto lease and BCA never had any problems with Rust and all come with Full Service Histories
Lex and BCA have a very good name

That doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist. I have seen plenty of rusty uk imports with the irish equivalent usually far cleaner underneath.

If they leave the customs union there'll be duty on all imports. There's been plenty of meetings about this. But until we know how badly the UK wants to damage itself we won't know what will happen post April 2019.

Time to buy lhd on the continent.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

    Insurance ? Resale ?

'Twas 10% the last time I bought a car in from Japan.

They charge 10% duty on the purchase + shipping costs (including insurance) to get her into the country.
They then add that 10% to the total, and you pay 23% VAT on that (so you're paying tax on the tax!).
Then you get the privilege of paying VRT on the OMSP of the car.
And then you get to pay road tax!

No issue with either from the UK.

The insurance companies are making a bit of an issue about Jap imports, and the availability of parts when it comes to repairs. But if you're insuring it third party only, I can't see why that'd be an issue.

Whilst there's a huge amount of cars for sale in the UK meaning a wider choice and normally higher specs and superior servicing a high number of them will have a chequered past.

There's no excuse not to run a data check, and it's certainly a false economy if you don't.

There have been threads here in the past where a buyer has found out about clocking, cloning, outstanding finance or even cut and shuts too late.

There is value out there for sure, but as always shop clever, and be thorough.

Just heard this advert the other day. What a load of misleading crap. Of course there are pitfalls of buying abroad, but a halfway clued in buyer should have the cop on to do the research. The risks they referred to are not much different to what happens people here in some cases.

As for losing the paperwork. That would just be an idiot that bought the car then. A bit like losing the "log book" here. Plenty of Irish cars from dealers that have lost their service books from what I have seen over the years.
