Audi A5 service report advice needed

    Hi,

I bought a 2011 Audi A5 from Audi 2 years ago at 60km. It had its first Audi service under my ownership at 85km.

Looking at the feedback on the service report, there are a number of RED items requiring immediate attention. I know from previous posts that sometimes what Audi think are urgent may not necessarily always be the case (for ex – multiple posts indicating that audi service reports nearly always come back with brake discs need to be replaced).

    Driver F tyre – 78% worn, 245/45, €240

    Passenger F tyre – 78% worn, 3.0/3.0, €240

    Brake discs F – 1.7mm, 87.5% worn, €400

    Brake discs R – 1.5mm, 75% worn, €400

Timing belt – no history on file, recommend replace €490

Leak – Egr value slight leak oil, €500

    Fan belt – worm/to be replaced – €90

Should I go to an independent dealer and get 2nd opinion on all the above? Can’t afford to do all based on costs above?

Tyres – the tyres passed the NCT in May no problem – so could the tyres be that worn/road unworthy if NCT ok?

Anything of the above need absolute attention straight away?

How could there be no history on file of timing belt if it has been through Audi servicing previously.

Where is best to shop for Audi tyres if needed?

    Driver F tyre – 78% worn, 245/45, €240 - what tyres are on it?

    Passenger F tyre – 78% worn, 3.0/3.0, €240 - what tyres are on it?

    Brake discs F – 1.7mm, 87.5% worn, €400 - excessive

    Brake discs R – 1.5mm, 75% worn, €400 - excessive

Timing belt – no history on file, recommend replace €490 - what does the service book with the car say?

Leak – Egr value slight leak oil, €500 - about rought for Audi price to replace, fit, labor etc (http://www.a5oc.com/forums/a5-performance-mods/134066-egr-2-0-tdi.html - guide)

Fan belt – worm/to be replaced – €90 - can be done at home for the cost of the belt

    Thanks Billy Bonkers.

Will have to get back to you with answer on tyres - embarrassed to admit I don't know offhand.
Timing Belt - took a brief look at the service book post report and didn't see anything mentioned re: timing belt (so should I just assume it hasn't been replaced to date/noting noted from previous service)
Thanks for the link on how to fix the EGR leak - but as a female I can safely admit I won't be going near those instructions.

No worries, it was just to give you an idea of the work involved with the EGR work, it kind of justifies the cost.

I would suggest if you don't want to get your hands dirty, bring it to a couple of independent mechanics and get quotes.

If there is no warning light on the car I wouldn't bother with the EGR replacement to be honest.

It is a good idea to replace the brake discs if they are 90% or so.

Tyres again don't want to go above 90% or so to be safe IMHO

Audi recommend 135000 miles or 5 years for changing of the timing belt. You can get the water pump and tensioner and fan belt done at the same time, a bit of preventative maintenance never hurt anybody.

Don't buy tyres from a main dealer as they charge too much. Price the tyres from local tyre centres. Also worth comparing online tyre prices but remember that you will have to pay someone to fit, balance them and dispose your old tyres so it might not always be cheaper to source them online.

But don't get the cheapest Chinese tyres available! €130 yeah, but €240 is robbery.

This is Audi's standard report response if they didn't do it and there is no signed and sworn, written in blood, documentation to say that someone else did it.

They won't guess based on looking at the belt which in my opinion is fair enough - they tend to be over cautious on things like that so it doesn't come back and bite them if they say it's fine and then it goes. Some will tell you it's just a money making scam but having dealt with Audi a fair bit in the last few years I'd disagree.

that all looks fair enough. If the car had only short runs the egr is probably fairly choked.
Just note that when the engine management detects a certain level of emissions it will go into limp mode so the egr issue will bite you at some point.
Agree re tyres can defo do better than main dealers for good rubber

Audi dealers have an unbelievable reputation for telling it's customers that they need brake discs.

Find a local Audi specialist or a good local garage that friends or family recommend.

To be fair €490 for a timing belt change by a main dealer is a pretty good price imo.

480e for two tyres and 800 for front disks and pads?

Tyres, Do not buy them from Audi, get some decent ~ €150 tyres from a tyre fitter

Brake discs @ €800?? 100% daylight robbery. Any independent garage will supply fit with new pads for half that.

Timing belt, if that includes pump/tensioners, good price. Are they doing a promotion??

When does an EGR valve have oil??? Id seriously query this.

€90 for a fan belt?? Daylight robbery for a €20 belt

You would imagine if Audi recommended the tensioners and/or the water pump be changed as part of a belt change then the dealer would itemise and price it (if not included in the belt price) on the report.

OP send George Dalton a pm. He's a specialist on vw/audi and will put you right. I guarantee he won't be near the prices you've been quoted and he's probably the most honest and trustworthy mechanic I've ever met.

I've heard that Audi will price match tyres online. So on eire tyres for example if a tyre you want fitted is 110 euro then they'll charge that and then tack on whatever for fitting which is fair enough.

I got the same from Audi Cork a couple of years ago. About €1300 worth of fixes to an Ag 2.0 TDi....

    Both front top control arms
    Rear pads and discs and
    a brake fluid flush
    Change V-Belt (Alternator belt?)
Fault showing on Glowplug cylinder 2.

Got on to Daltons - quoted about €650 including labour. Got up there, left the car in, and got a call about an hour later. Went back and Tadgh showed me that most of the work didn't need to be done. Nothing like as bad as they said with brakes, V-Velt was perfect. One side of control arms worn, not both (I think). Got the brakes done anyway, as I was so embarrassed booking them for the day and not needing it. Tadgh was great about it, just returned the parts etc. Straight back down to Cork and gave Audi a bollicking of biblical proportions. They are banned from ever mentioning tyres or wiper blades to me again.
