Sad to see it go but be great see marks and Spencers or another big name store that will draw shoppers to town

Fine department store. Sad to see it closing. Feel sorry for the staff. Winstons, Dore's Butchers and White's Butchers all gone in the last year. Time marches on and things change I guess

Wil the cafe still be open upstairs? Fine building

And Whites butcher became a Murphy's Ice Cream parlour- this is my point, it's far more lucrative in a tourist town like Kilkenny to lease to things like this rather than traditional butchers or drapers etc.
It's a fine building but how often do you see people with a Winston's bag actually buying things there? Apart from the household dept there's nothing there that isn't done better, cheaper elsewhere.

Do the locals then have to go to the supermarket get there meat listen to a cashier like I had to the other day that was trained to say what he had to say to me, give me a butcher stall like Paddy White, or Paddy Kennas , Mullins any time because they traded local you have a bit of local gossip. Come next winter will there be much sale for ice cream etc whats the suggestion for Winstons a casino monte carlo style. Dores is closed for a long long time if you blinked shops are closing .

I get all my meat off Paddy Mullins, you cannot beat the butchers. I can't believe Winstons is closing. I most certainly will be vulturing for new curtains and maybe some stuff from the kitchen dept.

Yes, welcome to this century. Who in their right mind has time to go park, walk the whole way down High st for a piece of meat?
Suggestion for Winstons is some International chain like M&S or divide it into high end retail units. Winstons style retailing is dead/dying.

I would, I take ages doing my shopping, I know where to buy every product at either the best quality, price or value. Admittedly, I know the Mullins so part of the reason but I wouldn't buy my meat from a supermarket. Lovely burger with a lovely smoked rasher and Camembert, yum. Butchers are also good value.

Thing is most people do that now- I'd love to shop at a butcher's regularly but don't have the time or interest.
I would shop at a deli type butchers like say Nolans in Kilcullen but sadly Kilkenny has little in the way of that type- maybe Grogan and Browns.

Find that funny welcome to this century, we are seventeen years in this century you are talking to people like they are fools as regards parking a car running down high street for a piece of meat it would make more sence than shopping in Kilcullen it supports the local economy may be that's why Dores, Whites are gone. As you said you don't have the time or the interest to shop you have a busy life work myself roughly sixty hours a week still able to shop local because I understand class which I think you don't.

Will ya make up your mind? Stating you would love to shop at a butchers but then, you tell us you don't have an interest.....

Spare me! As I said i wouldn't be trapsing down High st to buy meat- clearly most people don't either else they wouldn't be closing. A convenient deli/butcher yes. Not Whites, Kenna's or Dore's. I thought that was fairly obvious but clearly you need it spelling out. Twice

Someone fetch Jim a medal. A modern day saint.
On topic, Winstons is last century- hence why it's closing

Winstons were approached by a large indigenous Irish retailer who made an offer that was difficult to reject.

The retailer already has a premises in Kilkenny which will stay open but as a different format

    Dunnes? :)

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

nope - but it is a family owned company and I believe whilst the approach was made 2-3 months ago, the paperwork was only signed Friday afternoon.

I would guess that the new store will employ at least the same number, if not more staff.

Great news, as long as their original store, wherever that is is doesn't suffer. It's a good location, surprised Dores hasn't been been let yet, must be looking for too much for it?

Nope - and if what I heard is true, Kilkenny people will like what will be done with their current smallish store.

I'd love to say who it is, but I'd probably need crutches if found out. :)

But safe to say it was an opportunity that worked for both parties and it won't see any net job losses or an empty building.

If I'm working up that way Jim I would go there, not intentionally. It's a template of the likes of Kennas should follow in KIlkenny. The traditional butcher is dying as evidenced around the centre of Kilkenny.

Penneys surely? I told yiz all it would be something like this, more money can be made by the big players on prime premises away from the traditional retailing.

Lifestyle have a large store right across the way. Elverys have two decent stores very closeby. No way either of these would warrant as large a premises as Winstons.

Perhaps they'll leave the household end of things in Market cross store?

I'm 99% sure of the info received - the new store will be Elverys. One of their current stores is on a temporary lease.

And despite some media reports, Winstons were doing fine, but just like Monster house years ago, sometimes you need to know when to change before its too late.

In Waterford, Elverys opened a huge store, so size is not an issue.

With Sports Direct opening their second Irish Store taking over the Arcade, Seems risky.

I agree I think this sounds nuts- will they be taking the whole store? Elverys range is actually way more limited than say Lifestyle or JD.
Winstons store is spread over 4 floors- is an Elverys realistic there over so much space?

Winstons floor space is totally underused for the calibre of the premises. The building and surroundings are spot on, the stock dreadful. For menswear, they had no proper concessions or brands and just stocked a few bland lines that would appeal to the less fashion concious amongst us!

Seem to be selling off stock at a rate of knots- not much left there on the floor.

shame really was hoping it might of been heatons or pennys, does Kilkenny need another big sports shop

Heatons are going into the old high street mall with sports direct.

Sports shops are fashion shops in disguise - I'd say 80% of purchases are non sports use.

I believe there will be a very large Kilkenny GAA dept within the store.

Mike Ashley who owns Sports Direct also owns Heatons so where one opens it includes a Heatons etc Carlow.

I think the one over Heatons in Carlow might be slightly different- it's now called H-Sport and used to be SportsWorld. I think the one in Kilkenny is SportsDirect and I gather there's subtle differences- but we'll have to wait and see I guess.

Never heard that but would have been a fantastic addition. Elverys brings nothing new to the table, KK is already well supplied with sports shops and they already have 2 stores selling the exact same stock 2 mins from eachother.

I also heard Elevrys... and that was from someone who works in the cafe... totally agree as to why or what they can bring? 4 floor is alot to fill... Penneys or Avoca or even The Kilkenny shop would of being better options.

No, none whatsoever. Even just back in May they were planning Christmas. Approach was made towards end of May by people representing a major retailer who wanted the unit and a lease was agreed. The retailer was elverys -no other party even got a chance to make an offer.

Apparently the business was doing ok, ticking over. I guess they likely own the premises which changes the game completely.

I see Heatons have closed up shop now, directing people to Carlow or Thurles instead.
Anyone know when/if Dealz are moving in? Looks like it's cleared/empty now. The fickleness of retail...

Sports direct are same company as heatons.

Kilkenny city centre is not a great location for the traditional heatons type of product - but it is for sports / sports fashion. Hence the preference for a standalone sports direct than a heatons/sports direct mix.
