Saorview Aerial?

    Hi all,

Apologies if not the correct forum, please redirect if appropriate :)

We currently have two Saorview approved TVs in the household but they're currently only receiving an analogue feed. It's about time we got in board with RTE in HD etc so Its about time to get a proper Saorview aerial.

I'm completely new to all of this so pretty unsure of what exactly we'll need. I bought a "One For All" indoor antenna/aerial from Tesco a few months back, however that was very fiddly and had to be placed in a really awkward position and area in order to pick up the signal, so that's been left gathering dust.

I presume we'll need a proper aerial / antenna for the attic to get a proper signal which can then be fed to the two Saorview approved TVs we currently have along with any others we may get in the future?

Could any of you kind, educated, techie folks please point me in the right direction as to what exactly I should be looking for?

Does more expensive mean better, or is it like HDMI cables whereby they're all pretty similar regardless of cost?

Any brand in particular to get?

Don't mind ordering online or from bricks and mortar store. Just not sure what exactly to get!

Any recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks! :)

What is the recommended transmitter covering your location and how far away is it according to the coverage checker?

This will better inform the reply regarding aerial group required and the possibility of attic reception.

    Analogue ?

The old analogue system was switched off in 2012.

I presume that you are in Dublin and that the analogue feed you are referring to is a UPC cable connected to the back of the TV.

Bear in mind that you will lose the ability to receive the other UPC analogue channels unless you add a y cable junction at the back to combine each feed.

What you should do is buy a length of coax cable and a coax "back to back". This will alllow you to position your one for all aerial in a better place that will improve the signal. Normally by a window cill or upstairs. In Dublin this should be fine. You can buy an aerial extension kit over the counter in the likes of power city for less than a tenner and it will probably have all that stuff I have mentioned above.

If you want to rig up a system that covers all the rooms or more than one TV, then you are better off buying an outside aerial and running it to your attic and connecting to to a small distribution/aerial splitter and splitting it out to each room from there. You will probably find that the house has been pre-wired for this and there are a few coax cables lying in the attic connected to nothing.
