I had to take out a shower tray and enclosure after te tray cracked and rather than a straight replacement the women in the house are wondering weather I could fit a bath with a side panel. The wall is 2200 long and has the have room for a hand basin, it would also mean changing the rad to an upright one, can it be done and is it worth it?

As the standard bath is 1700mm long and 700mm wide, you should have enough space for a wash hand basin at the end of it.
If the bath is to be used for taking showers on a regular basis, I would strongly recommend installing a steel (not cast iron) bath that is fully supported on all sides.
As to whether it's all worth it, depends on the amount of work involved, re-tiling, material cost and if it better suits the requirements of the household than a shower enclosure.

Thanks for that, as to the cost, probably not worth the effort but I'll be outnumbered in that decision, some retiling needed if I can match the old tiles, otherwise strip and start from scratch, is there a smaller than 1700 bath easily available?

There are smaller available, but often by special order and may be more expensive.
You would need to contact the different suppliers for prices.
