Advice on new alarm please

    Hi all

Just managed to get a house, which isn't easy nowadays. While it has/had an alarm system, some of the sensors are hanging off the windows, the alarm panel has no power and the wiring is run in ugly trunking around the house. As there'll be no one in the house during the daytime, I need an alarm but I don't think the one that's there can be rescued. Plus it looks very old.

Any idea what it would cost for a new one as the two guys I rang never showed up. It's a three bed semi with garage conversion. Apart from front and back doors, there's also a patio door and a total of 8 windows. My brother got a new system in last year and it's all wireless which sounds good to me as I can then get rid of the existing trunking. My mother also replaced her alarm a few years back but the system she got in uses motion sensors instead of contacts on the Windows. While I wouldn't want to scare her, if the motion sensors go off, it means someone is already in the house. So that option doesn't seem great.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Hi
Yes, it sounds like wireless is going to be the best option. You should get 2-3 installers out for a proper survey of the property. From there they can give you a written system design proposal /quotation.
You are right to be looking at perimeter protection ahead of internal PiRs.
Look at covering all ground floor and accessible points of entry with inertia shock sensors and contacts. After that one or two motion sensors to back up and verify alarms.

Its not great having a system like that, all it does is provide a false sense of security IMO.
If possible Id recommend using what ever cabling that can be used and mixing this with wire free devices if necessary.

How much would this system typically cost.

Check out what companies are located in your area and get 3 of them out to do a survey and do you out a proper system design proposal /quotation.
