For a 2 bed terraced townhouse....

Any tips/ideas? Just looking for something basic - basically if some lad tries to enter the gaff while I'm out it will go off!

Are you looking at wired or wireless?

Never even thought of that - what is the difference? My knowledge is pretty limited to say the least! What ever is cheaper I am thinking really!

Is this property already prewired for an alarm?

Yes it is actually! It is a new house only 2 years old - I remember builders specifically saying when I move in 'it is pre wired for alarm already'....I presume this is good thing? Although wireless sounds good? What's the verdict?

If wired then a wired alarm is more practical and preferred.
On a wired property we would use GSD i1070 or Siemens SPC4000 range..
Both these systems are hybrid so you would have the option to add wireless devices also.
They have the option of free apps over IP or enhanced options over GPRS for extra redundancy if required.
    Both have CCTV integration also.

Any idea of rough cost? Doesn't say on website...

Might go with first one as based in Cork

Would a Nest suit you? I have two cameras and so far I find them excellent. It's not strictly an alarm as there is no siren that goes off. Instead it alerts you directly. It's also handy for keeping an eye on pets or that sort of thing.
I've never seen the point in a siren myself. Have you ever rushed into a house because you heard an alarm and you wanted to do the absent homeowner a favour by apprehending some burglars? On the other hand an alarm going off annoys neighbours and alerts ne'er do wells to the fact that your house is unoccupied.

    A nest? Huh?

I hadn't really given it too much thought - I suppose ultimately I am living alone and not there much of the time.....I was thinking a bit ol skool really - my idea of an alarm if you turn it on when you go out, if somebody tries to break in a mad siren goes off - simple as that really....I hear what you are saying about neighbours not rushing to a persons aid but a deterrent so to speak I feel is enough if you get me....Not looking to spend a fortune either!

It would really be best to get a few people/companies out to give you some ideas & pricing.

Unless the alsrm is monitored it is nothing but a nuisance to neighbours if it goes off and thats only for 15 mins as thats the european max time an alarm is allowed to sound for.
