Two great movies in their own right, why say which one was better than the other?

I suppose it's because they always get lumped in together. When I think of the Green Mile I always think "the really good film that isn't quite as good as the Shawshank Redemption"

    without doubt shawshank

I love both but Shawshank wins hands down

If you get a chance read the Green Mile....amazing book.
The lead up to Del's execution is just the most intense experience.
The movie is good but the book is an excellent read. One of favourite of King's.

Ive always preferred the Green Mile, I find I can go back and watch it countless times and it never gets old, can't say the same for the Shawshank.

Have not seen the Shawshank in a long time and if it was on I wouldn't really be bothered where as the Green Mile would always grab my attention.

Anyone who prefers the Green Mile over the Shawshank Redemption is being deliberately obtuse.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

    Shawshank.

GM was good for one watch but i wouldn't do it again. Too sentimental. And Otm Shank grates me a bit...ever since 'Wilson!'.

Shawshank Redemption for me, though both are good movies. Shawshank is better though :)

The bookends nearly ruin The Green Mile.

Whatever happened to Darabont anyway? It seemed like all the Shawshank praise went to his head.

    Both utter and total nonsense!

Shawshank for me to. Absolutely love it. Really like the Green Mile too. I do think they're quite different and most of what they have in common is it's set in a prison.

Frank Darabont developed The Walking Dead for screen and directed The Mist in 2007 I think.

Am I the only one that find both films to be sentimental ,shallow and trite ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 26 Heisenbug

Shallow, trite? I definitely don't think you could describe them as such. The themes aren't original, but they both movies are executed superbly. They feel original I think. And of course, they're backed up by great performances from the cast.

Shawshank is the correct answer, what do I win?

Shawshank although GM is a good movie

Shwshank is a movie I've watched multiple times and enjoy each time.
I've only watched Green Mile once, but did like it. I would probably watch again if nothing else on.
    Basically Darabont+King+prison = Quality movies

Shawshank is very overrated so it's The Green Mile for me

I prefer the Green Mile, but they are both great films.
I choose the GM because it bridges both the period drama and the hint of ghost story that King is more famous for.
The cast is just brilliant too, both are great but I think GM wins it.

Really like both but once you know the reveal in TSR it kinda ruins additional viewings.

TGM is consistently rewatchable due to MCD as John.

As true an on-screen portrayal of a character feom a book that I've ever seen, just the perfect performance.

Shawshank. I do think it's somewhat over-lauded though. I wouldn't classify it as one of the all time greats in movie history as many seem to believe it to be. I always though it a movie for ppl who aren't particularly into movies and thus those ppl though it was brilliant. You know the sort that only like 'real life' movies and none of that science fiction nonsense.
