    This not only makes sense, it makes common sense to me, mostly due to current theories on the reason for the extinction event.

    Gamma ray burst destroyed life to some depth in the seas and certainly all over the planet and took away the ozone layer too. ( for a while anyway ) only survivors came from places the radiation couldn't get to them eg the deeper seas.


    It seems plausible if unproven.
