Cut a field for bales last week and its still bare out. Would it work to throw a bag of grass seeds out per acre with a wagtail and then roll in and graze the field tight for the remainder of the year?

Dont want to go spraying it off as I am a bit tight of grass at the moment and will need to keep on grazing it and will be selling a share of animals come the end of September.

Sward isnt as thick as id like hence trying to get a bit more grass out of it.

there seems to be plenty showers over the next week to help it germinate

If you could give it a few runs of a tine harrow before shaking seed and then roll along with few bags of 10/10/20 it will all strike no bother

Seen a guy give it a run of a power Harrow and seed one pass .tines hit the ground by a millimetre .you think it was a waste of time but that little bit of dust took the seed and you could see some difference after . He rolled it in .

Bit of an overkill when a tine harrow will do the same thing

How is the tine harrow you bought earlier in the year working out for you reggie? Are you seeing any good results from the work you have done so far?

Any work I've done has been fine. Lads around here are still a little unsure of the system as the powerharrow is still king around here.

Lots of enquires and the likes but I'm guessing lads are afraid to commit after talking to the neighbours or whatever. Just afraid of trying something new.

Have you found a seed that works best?

Really it's just down to the farmer as they all have thier own opinions on what best suits thier land.

First rule of contracting. Never tell the farmer that he's wrong :D

After our silage was cut in June we put out slurry followed a few days later by grass seed with the APV Spinner on the Rakeman 3000 (no roller used) and it's growing well.

Only time we use a roller on our land is when a full reseed is done (plough, power Harrow etc). Rakeman used instead.

Usually the seed goes on before the slurry

I take it, ye are not spraying with roundup in any of the above cases.

Nope just stitch in. Have to stitch in clover into about 20 acres on Friday so see how that goes. The farmer is a bit........ You know yourself :D

Not all seeds are suitable for overseeding. The most important part is to have moisture in the soil use suitable seed and have soil cover.

What is the ideal depth for grass seed?

I think anything more than 2cm is too deep. Only needs to be touching the soil really

Tetraploids are the boyos for overseeding with clover mixed in if you wish

As usual it was an after thought to throw out the grass seeds - took a chance & thankfully it's worked out...
