Audi A6 intermittent start issue -help!

    Hi,
Really hoping someone has experienced this issue before. Recently bought a 2006 A6 avant to use a second workhorse car for lugging stuff around etc.
Anyway, it has an intermittent start issue. Will fail to start, leave it for an hour and come back and it starts right up so is very frustrating. Took it to local mechanic who had a look and said bring it to audi. I'd really like to avoid that if possible, would probably cost me half the purchase price if the car.
When the car fails to start it turns over but just won't catch, and then throws up errors about electronic parking brake and brakes in general. When the car starts successfully there are no such errors.
The car is the 2.0 tfsi auto petrol.
If anyone has any ideas on something I could try DIY, or recommend someone in Dublin / Kildare area who might be able to solve at non Audi prices it would be appreciated. Driving me mad!

    Thanks

You can get a diagnostic done by Audi and an indy to fix the issue. But an intermittant fault may not show up when a diagnostic is done so don't be expecting anyone to give you a solution.

You can access the error codes to see it's any use.

Might be a dodgy starter or an electrical issue, the brakes errors could be due to the power drain from cranking it over unsuccessfully. Only guessing.

Where are you based ? I can scan the car for you if you are near Kildare.

The mechanic I gave it to checked error codes but didn't see anything related specifically to starring error so told me it was best to bring it to Audi, I'm assuming probably big bucks for audi to investigation on a fault like this so was hoping someone might have experienced something similar and could give me a steer.

Thanks for the link to the audi forum, hadn't come across that yet and will have a look at those suggestions. Seems similar, I've tried leaving the parking brake off but problem persists (handbrake error still shows).

The brake error shows straight away so don't think it's down to battery drain, I can crank it a few times to no avail, leave it for an hour and then come back and it'll go as if there was never a problem. Grand if I'm not in a rush but I fear I'll end up stranded somewhere unless I get it sorted. But I don't want to fork out massive money to Audi to investigate wiring etc if there is a potential simple fix.

Other suggestions or recommendations welcome, I'm based in Celbridge

How long did the mechanic spend troubleshooting? Seems a bit like a fob off.
    Try a different garage.

    Try a different garage.

He had the car for a day, said he tried a few things (was quite vague) but couldn't figure it out without investing serious time into it and trial and error with parts, given its intermittent its hard to tell when it's sorted, I could drive it for a a few days thinking all is well then get stuck trying to pick up my daughter or something. He ended up saying that I would be best with an audi garage.

I'd have no problem bringing it to another independent but it's a bit of a hassle dropping off a car usually during work hours and managing to get back to collect it (possibly unfixed), so it would be ideal if I had someone point me in the direction of a mechanic who had worked on a similar issue in the past and who could maybe cut out some of the trial and error work.
