So we blocked up our chimney as we switched rooms around the house so our bedroom is where the chimney is. We now get a smell if soot every few days in there so I'm looking for a solution please.
The chimney was blocked up with plasterboard and it has 2 small holes for ventilation. On top of the chimney one of these was used... http://chimneyfluepotplug.ie which is also great for noise reduction
On some days there is no smell but every now and again we get it.
    Any help is appreciated, cheers.

It's possibly getting damp due to some water ingress. Is the smell worse after rain?

Also - is there a vent in that flue pot plug? I can't see from the pictures. In my opinion it should have a vent.

Yeah it does seem worse after rain.
No there's no vent in it, it came with a gasket that I didn't use as it said you could do either.

Dragon Den winner but no CE approval on an item that materially changes the way the building fabric works, why I am surprised.

OP it needs to be vented.
my guess is that the concrete chimney cap is not sealed to the flue. allowing water down the outside of the flue liner till it reaches the gather and then drops into the fireplace where soot will have gathered [ or similar, especially if there is a bend in the flue]

Okay thanks, I'll have a look at the chimney on the roof and seal around any gaps.
Any ideas of a chimney cap similar that you would recommend, especially for keeping noise out?
