BMW E90 2010 Manual Gearbox Replace/Repair - Galway

I am looking to see what my options would be to replace/repair the gearbox (manual), clutch and flywheel on a 2010 BMW 320d E90 EfficientDynamics.

A couple of weeks ago, while driving on a rough car park, my car would not engage reverse gear and would grind as the clutch was released when putting into reverse. No other gears are seeing any issues and I can drive forward with no issues whatsoever. Nor had the problem gradually manifested itself to my knowledge, it seemed all of a sudden, the car would not engage reverse. Since then, the car has not been able to go into reverse.

I have had a BMW garage assess the car and they are suggesting a replacement for the gearbox, clutch and flywheel as they 'cannot repair parts, only replace' as per policy. Hence, they have provided quite a substantial estimate (+€6000) so I am contacting various places to see if I have any other options, ideally in or near Galway.

I have came across a couple of places in Dublin from other forums (gearboxcentre .ie and mrgearboxmrclutch .ie/) both of which have heard of the problem, would check if the clutch and flywheel would actually need to be replaced or just the gearbox, have parts in stock, with very good reviews and offering a years guarantee. But it's just the hassle of 2 round trips to Dublin (possibly outside working hours). Both places coming in at <€2000 (and that's if all 3 parts have to be replaced, which may not be the case).

Would anyone be able to recommend any places in Galway / Connaught who would be able
to do this for a similar/better price than Dublin? Who have heard of the issue before, offer guarantee, use genuine parts etc?

If I don't hear anything back on this before end of next week (race week!) I will most likely go across to Dublin for the work just based on reviews.

    Any opinions / suggestions welcome!

    Cheers!

    Ryan

I can't make a recommendation but if the box is coming out, it's always best to replace the clutch and possibly flywheel while it's out, regardless of whether they "need" to be done.

god they sicken me with their ridiculous quotes for repairs.
The clutch and flywheel are only about €500-700 for oem parts, not sure about gearbox so quoting 6k is farcical.
But as was said above get all 3 done. You could take a chance on just the gearbox but I reckon down the road clutch and flywheel will need replacing too.

its fairly common too from the sounds of it. Maybe you might be ok with just the gearbox.

Might be worth having a chat with Bavarian Autotechnik down in Abbeyfeale, they are BMW and german car specialists.

Toyotafanboi & Blazer, ye're right and that seemed to be the impression I'm getting from some places too; if you're going to the extent of taking out the gearbox, might be just as well to do all 3.

Cheers Doltanian, will try give that crowd a call on Monday
