Need a car that I can resell easily in 6 months

    Hi,

I'm moving abroad in approx 6 months, and my current car has just died.

I need a cheapish replacement, but one that is easy to sell, so I may set aside some of my own preferences in favour of something that has mass market appeal and will depreciate minimally, and be easy to sell on 6 months from now.

    Some context:
We only drive 10000 kms per year, so will add about 5000 kms.
We have 2 kids, so something as small as a yaris or a 911 won't work ;) But midsize hatch/saloon would be fine I guess.
Ideally will be cheapish to buy, tax, and insure- I've just discovered that insurance companies want an arm and a leg for anything over 15 years old.

    Thanks.

Have a look at the bangernomics thread.

Taking a look, but a car that is over 15 yrs old seems to cost a fortune to insure. We have 9+ years no claims, but we are being quoted 1500 to insure a 2001 car.
    Some agencies won't even quote.

That's the problem, to lose the least between now and then you need to spend the least upfront on a car. No point sitting on a 5k car in 6 months time when you're exiting the country.

Also check with your current insurance company, if you still have a policy with them then they may continue cover on an older but cheap runaround for the next 6 months or so. The 10 to 15 year old car refusal rule may only apply to taking out a new policy.

Have you a budget in mind for it? I'd be looking for something about €3k or so, very little to depreciate and because of low value more affordable selling on.

I'd suggest something like a Toyota Corolla or Ford Focus with 1.4 engine, try to get one with tyres that have a good years plus driving left on them and the car has a long NCT. You should be able to get a 2007/2008 petrol model for €3k which should be inside the majority of insurance company restrictions. Try to get a neutral colour that will appeal to most with good interior not ripped to bits.

    Here's 3 I'd look at...

Our insurance has lapsed by a few months, they treat it as a new policy unfortunately.

Good point on the 3k, as long as it's insurable for reasonable money. Not sexeh choices, but that's something I have to live with for now :pac:

Do Priuses/Prii resell well here, are is there still the fear that the battery will explode?

I was looking at some on Donedeal last week, seems to be plenty going for between €3-€5k, no fear of the battery exploding. If your getting one you should insist on the seller getting the health of the hybrid battery tested, Toyota main dealers will do it for €50, this will also aid sale down the line. Potentially the Prius eco friendly image might have less used sales potential than a standard car, I don't really know. They are super reliable and any driver I have talked to that had one liked them, including a few taxi drivers.

Might be worth checking out rentals. No insurance or tax worries, and best of all no resale issues. Was a few threads on here about a few doing this long term.

Not the best idea around August though. Prices are tweaked towards tourist during summer
