NCT query for car without NCT

NCT expired Dec 16, car declared off road for a bit of TLC, looking into getting it back on the road soon. If it does not have a current valid NCT can I test it 'early' (as in the 3months before test due) and get the 15 months, or if I test it in Oct / Nov / Dec will I just end up with a cert up to end of Dec 17?

Or if I go for a test anytime between now and Dec will I just get a 12 month cert from the date of the test?

If the car is tested within 90 days of it's due date (whatever day that is in December) it will be NCT'ed until December 2018.
If you get it tested before the 90 day window you will get a cert for 1 year from the test date.

Sure there is no NCT covering the car now, thus passing a test will only cover you for 1 yr from the test date surely.

If the car is tested within 90 days of it's due date it gets a cert valid until the same due date next year.
Even if it hasn't been tested for 5 years it's "anniversary date" remains the same

    Green bit is true.
    Red bit is incorrect.

Red would be correct if car had valid NCT currently.
And considering it doesn't have valid NCT, if it's tested more then 90 days before next due date it will only get a cert valid until next due date.

    Example.

    Test expired 15th December 2016.
If car is tested on 10th September 2017, it will get NCT cert valid until 15th December 2017.
If car is tested on 20th September 2017, it will get NCT cert valid until 15th December 2018.

out of curiosity, how could I go about changing the anniversary date that test is due?, car is only run for the summer months and if nct was due in the summer it would be handier as the car would already b out n about n wee niggles could be spotted easier

If NCT is in date, you can do voluntary early test, which will amend due date.

    Example.

You have valid NCT now and next one is due on 10th January 2018.
If you do voluntary early test on 15th September 2017, then your next test due date will be on 15th September 2018, and on every 15th September in all consecutive years.
(that's assuming car is over 10 years old, as otherwise it will be 2 years instead of 1).
