08 Focus 1.6 tdci jutter when warm

Hi all , can somebody please help me. I have a 2008 Ford Focus 1.6 tdci 124k miles.

When I bought the car it was going into limp mode so plugged her in code came up EGR stuck closed so unplugged the EGR no bother on the car no power loss whatsoever just heavier on fuel.

I did notice when I was doing between 80-90 mph the car would jutter a small bit. This has got worse.

Its now starting to do it in 3rd gear on about 2100 rpm and 4th gear on about 2800 rpm.... sometimes it flys through them no stutter but mostly get it at around 2800 - 3000rpm.

Anyone any idea its driving me mad and getting worse. I stuck in an injector cleaner the other day with half a tank problem seemed to be sorted and then came back a day later. Not sure if this was just a coinsident. All help much apprechiated.

If you've been running without an operational EGR, the DPF will suffer.
The injector cleaner may have helped burn off a few extra particulates, but the filter may be already quite full of ash.

I dont think my model has a DPF i thought all cars 09 onwards have them. Mine is the MK2 2008 1.6 TDCI LX 90bph

Any codes present? Can you get live data when the problem appears.
Double check the dpf as mentioned. I believe they attempt a burn off at cruising speed

You're right. Needed that extra info as the 90bhp doesn't have a DPF, but many of the 110bhp 1.6 TDCis do.

The next most likely scenario would be the fuel filter.

Any idea when it was last changed?

Thanks for the replie... I plugged back in my egr and cleared codes. Drove at 75mph in 4th gear. It made some difference for about a week. I had believed this was regening the DPF as I did actualky have second thoughts to believe my car had a DPF but as you said the 90bph doesnt.

Im getting a new egr and full serive tomorrow so hopefully that should do the trick. I was convinced up untill now it was the DPF. I was going to get a forced regen also when I thought it had a DPF.

It may have a DPF. I had an 08 focus which had one. 90 bhp. Mine was late 08 though. Mk 2.5.
124k on an 08 would be less than average for a diesel and if you're doing a lot of short journeys it may be DPF problem.

A jutter when warm would strongly indicate a leaking EGR valve. If its not that, it could be a faulty injector. Get a "leak off" check done on your injectors when warm.

    Re DPF:

AFAIK, the MK2 Focus, the 2005-2008 shape didnt have a DPF in the Irish 90bhp version, it did on some UK import. All Mk2 with 110hp had a DPF. The Mk2.5 Focus, the 2008-2011 had a DPF on all versions.

The easiest way to check to see if you have a DPF, is the existence of the differential pressure sensor. This is mounted to the side of the plastic case that covers the battery. It has 2x flexible tubes and 1x wire going into it.

This picture is of the 110 HP. The 90HP has a different shape turbo and different air control valves on the front of the engine behind drivers headlight side

Thanks for your replie in regards to the EGR I just had a new EGR put in and a full service. I got the jutter slightly once on the motorway since.

Also in replie to the DPF. Mine is an english import but I rang Ford gave them my reg and they said my model is straight catylic converter.

    I reckon its an injector.

This happened mine. It was the induction coil. Straight forward fix for the garage.
