    Hi folks,
Brother is emigrating and will be selling his passat., 1.6 diesel. Have an 07 myself but with it being used more for farm work daily, thinking of buying his. Now the 2.0 diesel I have has been fine really and has no issues with the short daily journeys associated with the farm so if i do buy the 1.6 will be used for non farm work so most trips will be longer however they won't be very regular, will the modern diesel be alright if driven infrequently or are the issues with dpf and egr more distant related? It hasn't has the vw "fix "either

Well don't get the VW "fix" is the advice (there is an entire thread on that on the main motors forum.)

EGR valves can and are a common problem on the 1.6 TDi. You will notice a drop in power coming from your current 2.0 TDi also. B7.5 would be considered a big enough improvement on your B7 model over all though.

Have only driven it once or twice, it was grand, six speed but for my driving style i was moving up and down thru the gears a bit, more than I would with my own. He does a fair bit of mileage with work and has had no issues with it. 're the egr valves is it short trips or just that they may go regardless?

No VW just fitted EGR valves back then that had a high rate of failure. Apparently the "fix" accelerates the failure rate on them too.
