    Hi

just fixing up my teenagers bedroom.

and he wants plain skirting boards - not moulded.

    whats the best timber to use - 6" * 1" pine/deal board with a sanded edge ?

    other options

    Thx

    K

Teenagers will wreck any nice straight sharp edged soft timber in seconds.

Beauty of moulded edges is that they mask little knocks and bumps.

My teenagers turned adults leave a trail of woe rather like an sas team training in

    the death house.

I,d be inclined to think that a slight mould/chamfer/arris is a must here.

true - and probably a better look indeed.

but what readily available timber to use ?

Fixing is always going to be a concern on a wide natural wood, as a single mid board

fix may result in a tendency to warp across the face. Also only painting the outer surface

and not the face to the wall may encourage it.

Man made boards and composite materials dont have this problem.

Best wood for the job. How long is a piece of string.

Most stable wide material is probably a painted hardwood. But this kicks up the cost considerably

    as you know.

Cheapest stable wood for making your own skirting is probably Framire but widths may be a problem

could you get a t and g floor board and rip off the tongue . this will give you a 5 x 1 ish board. there will the grooves cut in the back to stop it cupping

With a squared off top edge dust will build up very quickly. ! For a varnished look southern yellow pine is virtually knot free and looks ok .For painting, yellow poplar is a good choice. Both are bought in the'rough' and need to be thicknessed down.
