Can you request an opposite sex officer during a frisk search at the airport?

I did hear that it was mandatory that airport officers frisking passengers were the same sex to prevent lawsuits which would bring up so many gray areas in terms of what assault was and not.

But seeing as some Western governments allow people to declare their gender, I assume that something as minor as requesting an opposite sex officer for a frisk would be allowed no? I'm thinking of trying in Dublin Airport here.

Interesting question, let us know how you get on.

    Really? Seriously?

I'm surprised? I can understand their suspicion if I completely refused a frisk but I don't see why asking for an officer in a gender you're comfortable with would cause any trouble.

Think this goes under the general heading of 'rocking the boat'.

What difference would changing the gender make make. Surely either gender are capable of assault. Or is it that you would be more comfortable being assaulted by the opposite sex.

How are you going to establish that the gender you request is, in fact the gender of the person they allocate to search you?

Maybe they should have to be certified, and be obliged to present
    certification on demand.

This should be a customercentric experience. The airport wasn't built
for the benefit of security staff.

If they don't like their boat being rocked, i.e doing their jobs, then they should get their p45.

    Ignoring the gender declaration question

Imagine there is a single male and single female officer at the security point

The queue is backing up due a large number of males, in the interests of speeding up the process I raise my hand and say, "I have no objection to a frisk from officer of any gender"

Not trying to cause trouble, just want to get moving

I've been frisked a few times in airports (i used to travel a good bit for work but dressed like a bum! :P)

Most of the time they actually asked me if i wanted someone of the same sex and if i was ok doing it in public or wanted to use a booth. That was America mostly.

So, don't mind the nonsense of it'll rock the boat. Airport security isn't some above the law agency. If you don't want a person of the opposite sex touching you for whatever reasons then say so.

They won't suddenly drag you into a dark room and keep you there for asking.

The op probably saw the same stunner as I saw in terminal one last week.

If you could request a specific official, the queue waiting for her would be out the building :)

Edit - realised the op is female
Maybe there's a George Clooney lookalike there for her!

The reason everyone's confused is because OP said he/she does want someone of the opposite sex performing the search which begs the question - why?

Why do you expect that you will be frisked in the first instance? Most people aren't. Sounds to me that you're courting controversy.

Based on the OP's recently created threads, I'd say it's more a case of time wasting.

Recent threads created by the OP include....
    • Advice on collecting sharp kitchen and utility knives
    • Is it really difficult to speak with a 'posh' accent?
    • Do contact lenses that hide bloodshot eyes exist?
    • Has anyone used US Preclearance?
    • Do 18-20s drink in the US while travelling?
    • Can you request an opposite sex officer during a frisk search at the airport?

Personally I take every opportunity to be frisked by a man wearing a utility belt and steel toed boots.

One of the perks of travel!

    enough of the stalking.

i think the point raised is fair enough, whatever the motivations. how far does this 'gender identification' go? can i identify as female, and use female bathrooms?

I always decline to be scanned by those body scanners. All that happens is they frisk you instead.

What's the point in this apart from being an annoying hassle?

The customer for airport security is the government, not the person flying.

i saw a lady being frisked by a male security guard a while back, though that was in Norway.

he asked her to wait and she just said "its ok, you can do it" and he did.

You don't get exposed to radiation. ;)

Okay, fairer response than I was expecting. But as far as I'm aware airport scanners emit a tiny amount of non-ionizing radiation meaning they don't have the ability to form cancerous cells. In saying that I'm far from an expert.

But it's still just slowing things down.

    enough of the stalking.

There is a reason why boards allows you to see someone's previous posts, identifying people who create a string of nonsense threads is one of them.

And 14 people have clicked the thanks button on my post so you're in a minority of one.

Don't be rude mate, leave that to the American immigration officers please :D

Seriously, a lot of my thread may seem pointless but this is a genuine question. I'm planning on travelling in a month and a half. I'd prefer if I get stopped to be searched by a young woman. I'm a man myself that's why I was so curious.

As I said, I really don't see why if trans people can declare their gender to the Irish government or the UK government, why it would be seen as unreasonable for me to make what I would think is a smaller request.

Jeez I thought trans/gender/fluid was a sacred cow amongst boards mods. That post is very dismissive of gender fluidists.

    First time.

Seriously, OP, there is very little chance of you being able to choose the person to search you (if you even need to be frisked).

Isn't it a GENDER ze is requesting, not a specific PERSON?

He said "young woman". I wonder would he be as happy with a 60 year old nana. A person is barely touched during an airport frisk and it takes all of 5 seconds. I really don't get what the issue is. It seems like the OP is just trying to be difficult for the craic.

It's quite possible to request something and hope for a particularly nice example of it. I don't understand your problem with that?

You can't just assume the gender of an officer. What if the officer declares themselves to be of a different gender. That would be mighty confusing.

Should security be obliged to have a diverse enough staff to cover the matrix of sex/gender?

Seems rather uncivil to tell people "oh yeah you can identify as whatever but if you rock the boat by claiming it at the airport you're in for a bad start to your holliers, fit in our traditional boxes our else!"

I saw a woman being frisked by a male security officer in Dublin airport yesterday.

I did think at the time it was strange as there was a female officer there too. Maybe the rules have changed and the OP doesn't even need to make the request?

    Go to China OP.

Pretty much every passenger is frisked quite "intimately" at security and over the course of multiple flights I've been frisked mostly by females (I'm male).

On second thoughts, don't go - Christ knows how many pointless threads that trip would spawn.
