Hitman and Hitman: Agent 47

Just picked up the 2015 Hitman film called Hitman: Agent 47 on DVD. Will have to watch it a few times to really judge it. Anyway, this is what my initial thoughts are:

First off, I have to say I really enjoyed the 2007 film Hitman starring Timothy Olyphant in the title role. It is one of these very underrated action films in my view and should satisfy fans of the new James Bond or the Jason Bourne films. From London to Africa and onto Russia and Turkey, there is a lot of high quality action and the hardliner lookalike impostor using Agent 47 to take out the moderate Russian leader is clever. If you enjoy Bond-style action, you will enjoy Hitman.

Now, the new film is not nearly as enjoyable at first look anyway. It still is enjoyable though but there are a few issues. Action scenes are executed too quickly (also a problem with the last 2 James Bond films) and one has to pay attention to what exactly happens all the time. The plot where there is a dying man who wants to protect his daughter via a secret agent is too like that of Bond film SPECTRE. Clearly one influenced the other? In fairness, I think SPECTRE copied Hitman Agent 47 as the latter was out first. So, knowing the storyline to be similar took the edge off of it but that was not the film's fault.

For some reason though the 2007 film felt more together. Cannot put my finger on it but the newer version is lacking compared to the older version. Overall Agent 47 I found more fun to watch than SPECTRE.

They are both terrible movies, the first one is much better than the second one however, by a large margin.. Probably because it has nudity... And Timothy Olyphant..

    However again..

    Terrible

The first one was decent enough for a computer game adaption and felt newish enough (barring the similarity to the saint and other hitman type films).

The second felt odd the whole time cos of the change of lead actor.

I love the first one and think it is very underrated and a very good adaption from a computer game. The second felt odd somehow, maybe the change in lead actor was part of it.

Though no reference is given to the first film, Agent 47's disdain for being who he is and the agent programme is faithful to how he was treated in the first. It is also implied that there are a lot of rogue agents out there working for themselves or others and not the organisation or are trying to form a new organisation. A lot of the background was not well explained. For example, we are not sure who Diana is loyal to in the end.

All said and done though, Hitman: Agent 47 is enjoyable but not as good as the first. I felt that it was around 30 minutes too short and rushed. Other films suffer the opposite and seem at least 30 minutes too long but Agent 47 could have done with a bit more explanation of things. A motif akin to how Mad Max 2 showed scenes from its predecessor would have been a good way to explain why 47 changed and also the status of Diana should be confirmed. In the first and early in the second, she was shown as a friend and ally to 47 as she is in the game. But at end of Agent 47, we are left in the dark as to whether the agent at the end who mentions he is working for her is working for her or only saying it.
