I've got my car in for a set of front pads on Monday. It's a 2013 3 series bmw. I'm taking it to an independent garage, just wondering what kind of ball park figure should i be expecting to pay for the pad replacement and Labour?

Brake Pad wear sensors need to be replaced also at the same time as the pads on these.

Yeah I know the sensor will have to be replaced as well, would more than 150 all in be crazy money. The works being done by an independent bmw specialist in donegal. I just want to have an idea of a price I would expect so I know I ain't being ripped off

You are probably approaching new disc territory now too, depending on the mileage and brake usage obviously. Don't be surprised if they tell you you need discs too which will push it more to the 300 ish range.

Yeah the cars got 95000 miles so I know the discs will need done soon. There is no pulsing through the brake pedal though or any vibration yet, but I do want to get them done by the end of the year.

The thickness is all that matters, more than 1mm worn per side and they need replacement, at 95k they will certainly need doing along with the pads now.

There is a small lip on the discs although I'm not sure how big, id says it's definitely 1mm or maybe more. Would it be bad to change just the pads now and do the discs at a later date?

rex-x is right - do pads and discs if its at 95k, going to be cheaper in the long run. Even if the disc are ok now they will not last long and then you have to do disc and pads again.

price on disc varies widely - go with oem or decent brand only

Yes, you really need to do them at the same time.

I'm going to say €200 for pads, €400 if it needs discs too if using a reputable independent.

Yeah he's the main independent most people with bmw's go in donegal as he was a mechanic in the letterkenny dealership before it closed.
I may get both done if it's not too expensive but if i done just pads now and discs in 2 or 3 months would the pads need done again? Or could I use the existing ones? He's also doing some other work so I don't know if I could be forking out 500 or 600 all at once. Cheers for the info folks ðŸ‘

You will need new pads again when you change the discs, and the lip on the discs tends to eat the BMW wear sensors way before the pads get low. I'd expect 300-350 for decent discs and pads on your car.

I think I may get the discs done now too then so while he's doing the pads just to be safe. Just hoping he doesn't charge me a bomb!

If it makes you feel any better I did a set for a friend recently with an e60 m5 and that cost over a grand :pac:

I left it with the mechanic but he was adamant the discs don't need changed even with the lip, he says as long as there's no vibration or shuddering when braking they should be grand so I'll take his word for it.

There is a minimum value for disc that can be measured.

Rather than going by mileage of the car, just change them when needed. If you do change discs you should change pads at the same time.
