About to sell only to discover VIN typo!

    As per thread title, I was just about to sell a car - new owner was just about to drive off having paid -when I suggested for peace of mind - just to check the vin from the Reg. Cert. with the physical vin on the screen/under the bonnet.

    Murphys law! - there's a typo on one Alpha-numeric character. I imported the car last year from the UK. Never twigged their typo.

    As anyone been through the process of getting this addressed? What's the most expedient way of going about it? How long will it take to sort out?

    TIA for any enlightenment.

    Not sure if it would be motor taxation office or NCT centre that you would contact initially to fix it. They may still have a scan or copy of the original V5 document and it may be straightforward update to do. At a worse case scenario they may seek a confirmation from the manufacturer that the correct VIN matches your car.

    Where is the typo, in one of the last 8 digits?

    It's the 8th digit from the start i.e. it's not one of the last 8 digits.

    It was very late in the day and so I just managed to get a hold of someone behind the central customer service number for NCT/VRT. They claimed that it could only be sorted out via the Motor Tax Office in Shannon (even though it must have been their mistake at the outset).

    I have no choice but to wait until 9am on Monday to try and sort it out then.

    Surely someone else here has been in this situation? How did it get resolved? What's the most expedient way to get it resolved?

    Is this such a rarity? Very surprised that someone else has not found themselves in this situation? Obviously, I'm keen to figure out how long it will take to sort out - in case the buyer loses interest.

    That digit is one of the spec identifiers, and not the specific vehicle ID so might not be an urgent issue.

    Go to your local motor tax office with your documents.
    Explain your situation, they will be best able to advise.

    For the benefit of anyone that finds themselves with this issue, the fix is as follows;

    - Contact Revenue in Rosslare. Most likely they will direct you to post in the cert. to them - with a cover letter stating the discrepancy. They will amend on the system and the Motor Tax Office in Shannon then issues a new cert & sends it out in the post.

    If there's a change of ownership in play, then they suggest completing the change of ownership section of the Cert. - send it in - and new cert will issue / be posted out directly to the new owner.
