Opinions on car roof bags instead of boxes?

Scratching of paintwork when the bag moves at speed.
No rigid mounting to bodywork wouldn't fill me with confidence.
Strap it down too tightly and you can damage the roof panel.
Its a cheap way of carrying stuff on the roof but to be fair not really ideal.
Roofboxes are a lot more secure and lockable thats why they are popular.
You can hire one if you don't feel like buying one.

In relation to CJHaughey, i would imagine the common sense thing with a roof bag would be to mount it to a roof rack first.

In that case it would make sense. Obviously dont leave a heavy bag sliding around on the roof of your car. Roof rack and go from there.

There are variants of bags but tbh a proper box is best, imo.

Small trailer and tow it if you have a hitch and the appropriate licence. A small trailer would be lighter on fuel than a big horrible roof box. It all depends on the context and of what you'd need a roofbox for etc. A small trailer would be useful for other things also.

Except for going any sort of decent speed.

Yep Remember the max speed for a car towing a trailer is 80kph!!

Not a hope a trailer would be as handy as a roofbox, OP was worrying about storing a roofbox as opposed to a roofbag. How are they going to store a small trailer?

We got a Thule ranger 90 foldable roof box. It doesn't hold as much as a hard shell, and it can be fiddly to pack and get it closed, but it does the job, and it folds away into a pretty small lump that can be easily tucked into the eaves.

What about the aerodynamics of the bag?
