Getting off work for interview-Tricky situation

I'm off work sick yesterday and today, expecting to return on Monday but I've just been invited to a jib interview next week either Monday or Tuesday. Any advice on how to handle this?

"I've just found out I need to go to X place, can I take a half day on Monday?".

That's the usual way. Depends on the workplace obviously, but you can always come up with some excuse.

Could I do that at such short notice?

Like I say, it depends on your workplace. I could, but that's how my place works.

Agree with above, depends on your workplace practice on taking time at short notice.
Other option is to call in sick but after being sick this week it's likely to cause ripples.

"I'm really sorry for the short notice but I need to take an annual leave day for a personal/family issue"

Annual leave is your entitlement, you obvioulsy don't love your job or you wouldn't be thinking of leaving so don't let it hold you back in finding something better for yourself.

When I was trying to leave my last job I had the same conundrum as they required 2 weeks notice and were pretty petty about things like that, I hadn't taken any sick leave but I had a fairly good relationship with my line manager. I felt perfectly fine and not guilty at all handing in my notice a week later because in effect I had been quite honest in how I took the day.

    Best of luck

If your off for two days this week leading into a weekend you'll need a doctors note, I think. So your best then asking the doctor for more time off to incorporate the time off for the interview also.

You sure? He is sick for two days leading into a weekend 2 days time off, which would be four days sick? Any over 3 requires a note I thought.

Maybe answer the question he asked, not the question he didnt ask:eek:

OP tell work you need to take a half day monday. simples. If you cant handle that task, then assess why youd be looking for an interview in the first place! LOL

Weekend time is not work time, unless you work weekends.

3 Work days would be Thursday, Friday, Monday.

    Depends where you work.
Civil servants don't (generally) work weekends, but Thur - Mon would be five days sick.

    3 is not OVER 3.

Anyway, that's a pointless argument without knowing the work environment.

How is it pointless and I am answering his question. Get a doctor's note if he needs it and will give him another day or two off. Or as others have suggested call in for time off.

Three days sick is over three. Your returning to work on the forth day.

I have a sick cert for today and yesterday. I don't think you strictly need one for 3 days. Anyway it's all set up for Monday.

So what did you do so for Monday then?

My last workplace required a cert if you were to take the 4th day off, but not for days 1 to 3.

I would have been able to ring and tell my penultimate manager I needed time for an interview, even after being sick. My last manager I would have lied through my teeth.

That's why I'm saying it's a pointless argument, without knowing the work environment.

Kill two birds with one stone, ask to be interviewed out of hours. It's shows your commitment to your present employer. If they won't accommodate maybe you don't want to work there

I agree. I did this before and the firm giving me the interview were happy to oblige. I had my interview at 5.30pm.

In terms of sick notes that people are saying, in my job you need a sick note if you ring in sick on a Friday and a Monday (regardless of how many days off before or after). I don't work weekends either but they still count it as 4 days sick. So different rules for different places but I would think majority of work places (in terms of offices etc) would have this in place, so OP I wouldn't ring in sick again on the Monday anyway.
