Signing up to Virgin Media broadband - any things to be wary of?

Virgin Media have installed new cables in our neighbourhood, so I can finally upgrade my 2MB connection to 240MB, and not have to wait 8 hours to download 3GB files.

Anyway, is there anything I need to be aware of when getting them to install the broadband box, or any known problems that I should be prepared to rectify while the installer is on site?

Anything I should make sure they test / give me etc.

I plan to just get the broadband-only package for €35/month (240MB)

I'll assume then there's nothing I need to request from them initially.

If I find otherwise I'll post here afterwards for others in the same situation to save them headaches.

One issue to be aware of is that you'll be issued a public IPv6 address but a private IPv4 address (known as DS-Lite) which may impact on some services. This may or may not be an issue for you depending on what you use. But it will be a massive improvement on what you have.

Thanks, also regarding the phone line, is it a standard phone socket?

I'd need to connect my alarm up to it.

Yes it's a standard RJ11 socket but the backend is a VoIP connection so it may not be 100% compatible with the alarm, depending on how it communicates back. I'd advise that you check with the alarm provider.

Sorry one other thing... is it better to sign up direct with Virgin Media rather than using a 3rd party site like comparebroadband?

Comparebroadband seem to offer free cinema tickets so that'd be a nice freebie if it all works out the same in the end, or do I get caught up in a bad contract that I wouldn't if I signed up directly?

Remember, VM have a €200 early cancelation fee so if you want to move in 6 months to a location they don't cover they'll charge you that.

Vodafone are worse, they charge the monthly fee multiplied by the remaining months. So Virgin's exit fee isn't as bad as it could be.

Not saying it's good or bad - just something to be aware of.

So back to original question.. is signing up through bonkers.ie or comparebroadband.ie the same as going direct?

I get extras going through comparebroadband.ie

There shouldn't be any difference but just so that you are aware - Virgin offer a €50 One4All voucher for Boards.ie members - https://www.virginmedia.ie/boardsoffer
