Hello all, I'm considering going to Belgium for New Years with my girlfriend, was thinking about flying to Brussels on the 30th of December for 4 nights and then catching a train to Antwerp, Bruge or Gent.

I've been to these places before but never at that time of year so I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what it's like. I assume that there'll be plenty to do on the 30th and 31st but I was wondering if everything shuts down on the 1st and 2nd of Jan or will there be places open??

    Thanks

I would have presumed that the bars and restaurants would be open? We were in Brussells last December for the Christmas Markets. It was great.
Bruges Christmas Market finishes on the 1st Jan.

The vast majority of businesses across europe are closed during the christmas period, including new years day.
A small number of cafes and restaurants will still trade, though.

As a whole, Bruges and Ghent are very picturesque places to visit even if you can't go inside anything. Just walking along the canals is plenty of fun. I'd say go for it!
