Round trip Ireland - USA flight with our dog

Hi, we are traveling to the USA for 2 months in October to be with family, and would like to bring our dog. We will likely fly Aer Lingus out of Shannon to Atlanta or Richmond. I see on their website the basic cost for the dog is 160 per flight, but I believe you also must use a carrier company- I found a link saying you have to use Pet Express, but the PE site only lets you choose a US based departure. I'm basically wondering what the average total cost might be-- has anyone done similar who can advise us? He is a small, gentle, Border Collie of about 16kg. Thank you!

I met a woman recently at the airport. She lives in NY. She travels to Ireland regularly. She brings her small collie with her in a small container, in the seat besider her IN the plane. She got 'certification' that the dog is an emotional support animal. This means that the dog can travel in his soft crate/carrier in the plane beside her. She flies all over USA with him.

Thank you. My partner is on the Autism spectrum, and our dog is a great help to him in sensory overload/stressful situations. Travel certainly is one of those! I will definitely look into the emotional support dog thing, especially as I'm planning to volunteer with our dog as a Therapy Dog to visit people in care here in Ireland, and hopefully in the US at the wonderful Hospice where they cared for my mother. Thanks for your reply!
