I got 13 acres here and its not making much money, was thinking of buliding a hen house for Free range eggs.
Is there a grant for putting one up and is it as good as others make out it is

Have you a large urban catchment area local to you? Are you prepared to do door to door egg sales with a van?
    You need the market first.

Are "others" making it out to be a big earner, I'd love to hear what they are saying. It would be a big investment based on sketchy facts.

That's because it's the only way anyone survives on 13 acres.

Was talking about building a 6000-8000 bird house, most sell on to Greenfield Foods and have heard they are looking for more suppliers

Theres no grant and your unlikely to get any company to give you any form of contract without the possibility for expansion. it'll all have to be self financed and operated, id be thinking its a non runner as i've looked into it already. Another thing you'll soon realise is lads with chicken houses are very cautious about true info that they will share.

Bit like the dairy lads, all the talk is how bad the whole thing is, then you see them putting up another chicken house.

A 450k investment for 18k wage after expenses and that's on a reasonably good year. 365 days. No thanks. I think it's a bit like hire purchase. Once your caught the first time your kinda caught on a merry go round trying to make enough so you need another shed.

this say it where the money is, you never make it out of keeping cattle.
local egg farmers tell you there no money in them and its hard work but at the same time talking about erecting another larger house or extending the existing one

Well if that's the reasoning you use then work away, but the figures don't lie.
