Back claiming and assigning credits for marriage

My wife and I got married in early 2012 and from then on, we had always, under taxation purposes, carried on using our single persons tax credits (as it made no difference what we paid anyway).

But recently I learned that if one person was out of work, you could assign your credits to that other person during that period. I have had 2 instances where I was out of work for approx 6 months. Once in 2013 and late last year.

Am I able to retrospectively assign those credits over and claim a rebate on those periods?
If I can, how would I go about that?

    Thanks in advance

So would I just put '0' in the Other civil partner and the collective amount of both our credits in the Nominated Civil partner section?
