I am really awful when it comes to taxes and I know it's apparently very simple to work out but I just don't 'get' it no matter how much I try to get my head around it all.
Can someone please advise me what way is best to allocate tax credits with a couple as follows:
Married - main earner approx 43k
Other earner 24k part time salary.

I am due to go back to work this week following maternity leave and when I phoned revenue the other day they said all tax credits have been allocated to my spouse..
Can someone advise what's the best way to allocate credits? I know I sound very stupid but when it comes to all this - hands up - I am.
Also, there is a high likelihood of separation on the cards - as it stands we are on a trial separation for months now. I am currently taking things day by day but likelihood is we will be permanently separating but not legally for some time as we cannot afford to just yet.
    I haven't a clue what I do about my tax/credits etc
Can someone please advise? No judgement please just advice. Thanks in advance

Ask for the credits to be split 50/50 and allocate rate band 25k to the lower earner and the remainder to the higher earner.

Alternatively if you are going to be separating maybe ask for everything to be split 50/50 on a week one basis.

If your separation does become a reality you should contact Revenue so that the can send you out the standard separation letter and you can ensure that everything is divided as you wish for 2018. They are very helpful if you give them a call.
