Giving in my notice

I am planning on leaving my job in the next few months.

My contract says that a months notice is required. Does this mean 4 weeks? So if I was to hand in my notice on Friday the 1st of September, that my finish date would be Friday 29th of September?

I intended on handing in an actual letter as a matter of courtesy, as I have been with the company a long time. However, it's hard to pin down my boss, so I don't want a scenario where he is out of the office for a few days and I don't get to give it to him on the date I have in mind.

Would an email be acceptable in that situation? It does not specify in the contract that it has to be a letter.

I had a situation where my boss was on leave when I had to give my months notice. I went to my bosses boss and handed a physical letter to them. Alternatively you could post a letter to HR to arrive one month before you finish.

If your contract says one months notice that means a calendar month - hand in notice on 1st September to finish on 30th September, unless your manager agrees otherwise.

I'm not sure of the legal standing of an email in this situation.

  • I've always handed in my notice first verbally to my manager as a courtesy and then by email to HR which is the official bit. If you can get your manager on the phone then call him. If you want to finish up by the 29th Sept then just give them more than the month notice, hand it in in the last week of August.
