Buying a used car

    Hi,

    I am dipping my toe in the 2nd hand car buying market for first time years. I have noticed a few/fair few places selling cars that are imported from Uk. (Due to sterling/euro difference. the cars I been looking at have passed their respective NCT tests, and depending on the car have varying degrees of length before needing the next.

    A couple of questions:
    would a car check on the various websites (I've cartell) specialising in the service, include details from the cars time in UK?

    Is the NCT enough to instill confidence if looking at a Uk import? (via a dealer).

    Would I be entitled to the same rights as any other 2nd hand buyer who buys a car not imported from UK?

    Most car history checks will have information on UK imports but you still need to do due diligence on the car yourself, never assume anything. Look at the car's service history, ring the garages that serviced it to verify it matches what was done in the service book. Get the old UK registration and put it into the free MOT checker, maybe get a UK HPI report on the UK reg in case the Irish car history report missed something.

    Also the NCT means very little around whether a car is a good buy or not, it's a test of roadworthiness on the day it was tested, it is not a guarantee of mechanical worthiness. Bring a mechanic or someone who knows their way around cars to look it over. Don't assume just because it has a NCT cert that it's fine.

    If buying from a dealer your statutory rights are the same whether the car is originally Irish or British. Warranty will depend on how good or bad the dealer is at fixing issues so research the dealer as well as the car.

    Cartell shows all relevent details about UK cars, but it costs extra. If I remember correctly you pay 20.- for the regular report, which tells you if the car is imported (in case you don't know). If you then want the UK details on the car, you have to pay another 15.

    I would not trust the NCT alone, no. We recently bought a UK car which had fresh NCT but at closer inspection turned out to have damage to the chassis which many people her (boards) thought could actually be a problem for the next NCT. (Thankfully managed to return that car)
