Bit of an odd one...

I was driving along the M50 southbound this morning not long after 8AM. Doing about 50MPH as traffic was a bit busy. Traffic came to a pretty sudden stop but i managed to stop with plenty of space to spare. While i was stopping i had a look in the rearview mirror in case the vehicle behind wasn't so attentive and was going to slam into the back of me. It was a 171 reg transit type van. It swerved really badly before it came to a stop. so much so it ended up just outside its lane. Luckily it didnt hit anything in the lane next to it. What is odd is that it put its hazards on instead of moving off with the rest of traffic. on the traffic new a few minutes later it reported a vehicle broken down in the same spot. So the question i'd the answer to is what could it have possibly broken in the attempt to stop? It is only a few months old so i imagine it is in good condition.

Possibly an emergency fuel cut off switch that activates under emergency braking?

Yes but he didnt move off with the traffic. He was still there a while later because they mentioned it on the traffic report.

Could the payload in the van have been thrown forward into the drivers cockpit?

Maybe he had a cargo of dual mass flywheels, diesel particulate filters and timing chains and they all broke in the shunt.

Leaving the driver with no option but to stop , energize hazard lights, ring up the 1990's and ask for forgiveness.

    Or maybe a fuse.

I don't know what happened to the van but this incident underlines the value of putting on your hazard lights when coming to a halt on any road.

People are driving around on phones, talking to passengers, pacifying children etc. etc.

ps. not being critical of your driving.

Is there a chance he was rear ended?

the traffic report did say breakdown rather than collision but that could be a possibility
