    VRT appointment is next Tuesday.

For my VRT appointment, I will have the following ready:

    1. Completed ''Declaration Form for the Registration of a used Vehicle/ Motorcycle.''
    2. Completed Vehicle Purchase Details Form (VRTVPD2)
    3. Sales Invoice containing date of sale, and purchase amount.
    4. Proof of PPS Number.
    5. Proof of address - Utility bill/Bank Statement.
    6. Full V5C Certificate of registration from UK.
    7. Proof of CO2 emissions.
    8. Be able to locate the chassis number on thecar for the inspector if needs be.
    9. Have VRT estimate to hand just in case. (From Revenue online VRT calculator)

I have trawled through Revenue website,a nd forums non here, and can't see anything I'm missing?

    Anything else I need?

I think you have everything covered, just be aware that they will only accept up to €250 in cash.
The NCT Centre will also collect the VRT charge (and other tax liabilities) on behalf of Revenue. You can pay this charge either by

Bank Draft or postal order (made payable to Applus Car Testing Service Ltd)
Cash (up to a limit of €250)
    Debit Card
Credit Card excluding American Express (this method of payment will incur a 1.5% surcharge)
Company cheque with TAN numbers only (to a limit of €10,000 payable to Applus Car Testing Service Ltd)

thanks for that info, wasn't aware of the 1.5% surcharge on credit card payments. that would have meant additional €60 off quid at the desk, ouch!

Make sure your proof of address are originals as they wont accept copies.

Am I correct in saying that 2 above is only for "authorised persons"?

If I am the owner and imported the car myself, I don't need this form...? I have everything else ready...

Thanks - and sorry to ask a question that has probably been asked before...

Your thinking of the VRTVPD1 form which required the trader/dealer TAN number. There are two of these forms.

VRTVPD2 is to be completed by 'person other than an Authorised Person', i.e. for private vehicles.

    That's my understanding anyway.

Be able to locate the chassis number on thecar for the inspector if needs be.

This is not the one on the window but on the body of the car.
I brought in a copy of my P60 and bank statement but blacked out the numbers, they wouldn't accept them.

Just thought I'd post an update. Did the VRT yesterday, and all went well. I had everything prepared and signed, and was in and out in 20 minutes.

Below is the list of documentation I needed.

    1. I.D. (Driving licence)
    2. Completed Vehicle Purchase Details Form (VRTVPD2)
    3. Sales Invoice containing date of sale, and purchase amount.
    4. Proof of PPS Number.
    5. Proof of address - Utility bill/Bank Statement.
    6. Full V5C Certificate of registration from UK.
    7. Proof of CO2 emissions. (Was on the V5C).
    8. Be able to locate the chassis number on the car for the inspector if needs be. (Door pillar and window)
    9. Have VRT estimate to hand just in case. (From Revenue online VRT calculator)

I didn't need the ''Declaration Form for the Registration of a used Vehicle/ Motorcycle.''. The woman doing the VRT said the VRTVPD2 superseded that form.

Got my Irish Reg number and Irish plates straight away. Had to wait until today to tax it, as Revenue need a day to update their systems. Just done the tax now, car is fully road legal.

TIP: Something I just noticed. If you can, try register your imported car at the very start of a month to get the most value from your tax. For example, if you register the car on the 31st July 2017, the tax disc starts from the 1st July 2017, and expires 30th June 2018. if you wait a day later & register on 1st August 2017, the tax disc won't commences on 1st August and expire until 31st July 2018, so by waiting a couple of days until the next month starts, you could get a whole months road tax extra. Only small thing, maybe €20-€30 in the difference, but that will cover the cost of your plates!

Hope the above is useful to others.

Going to be doing the same process shortly on a car I put a deposit on today.
One question I have is in regard to the proof of address. With every car we have had we opt for a D reg using our inlaws residence. Is this now gone? We would have no utility bill for the inlaws address.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The utility bill will need to have the name and address of the person the car is being registered to afaik.

Hi Guys, I hop you guys can help me out with this?

Hoping to pick-up my car tomorrow from Northern Ireland but am having difficulty with the insurance transfer. Basically my insurer (AIG) wants to transfer insurance permanently onto my new UK car which leaves me stranded until the car is VRT and Road Taxed. It also leaves me very vulnerable to being stopped by the Gardai and having to explain my situation not to mention my taxsaver car park ticket is assigned to the old car!

What I want to do is temporarily transfer insurance for 2 hours to get the car to the house and begin the VRT process. I want to be able to revert back to my old car until a) I get the new car VRT and b) get the old car sold.

If not possible, with whom can I get insurance for 1 day to get the new car home?

    many thanks

No situation to explain to Gardai once you have proof of insurance and have booked the VRT inspection you are 100% road legal and there's nothing they can do. Did you ask current insurer would they do a minimum amount of days switchover like a week or so? When selling the old car unless you have open drive the potential buyers driving of other cars policy extension would cover the test drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 162 ✭✭Cannon_fodder

Tried all that with the insurer in two phone calls with them, they will not provide temporary cover of any description once you own the car. It is permanent or nothing, scandalous. I want to use the old car and attempt to sell it while the VRT process is initiated. Will have to look at open drive as the insurance is simply too restrictive.

I am not sure what the hell to do. My insurance is up shortly, my NCB cert would show a NI Reg as opposed to my old car which is also not ideal and raises questions. You are really made jump through hoops in this country to get anything practical done.

It was even suggested by AIG that I perhaps get my wife to drive the new car down with 3rd party insurance falling from her comp policy, but my arrangements are made and this rather straight forward element is a potential show stopper.

    Great info, thanks.

Just wondering if NCTS will fit the plates as well as supply them?

I know it's not a big job but knowing my luck I would makes a balls of it doing it myself.

Just completing the vrtpdp2 form which requires vat amount, I have a receipt from Northern Ireland car dealer but it doesn't give a vat amount, is this required. Car is an English import to NI but I didn't import it the garage I assume did so do I need a shipping Document to clear it here.
Also see from Burlys post that v5c is satisfactory for emissions. Would appreciate any advice.

    They won't.

Ring a local Motor Factors and ask if they will make, and fit the plates for you. If not, try Halfords.

I am not handy but did it myself. As I have 10 thumbs it took me 30 mins all in. If you're doing it yourself, take your time - measure twice, drill once!

    BOL!

Hi, I have my VRT tomorrow evening and I'm just a bit lost with a few sections on the forms. Similar to you, I bought a car in the north. Here's the few parts of the forms i'm confused about -
    VRTVPD2 Form:

Section 3; I am the new owner of the car and I bought the car from Northern Ireland. Does this mean I leave this section blank?

Declaration Form for the Registration of a used Vehicle/ Motorcycle Form:

A.10 EU Type- Approval Directives; I am not sure what they’re asking here? Do I tick the box of which of the 2 categories my car falls in to?

A.12 Registration and Date of First Registration in the State; Is it not being registered first in the state after I present for VRT and receive a new ROI registration number? Or do they want the UK Registration plate number here? If so, what is the date of first registration in the state?

B.4 Registration Number and Date (as issued by the Revenue Commissioners); Again, is this the previous information from Northern Ireland you are looking for and the UK registration Number?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :) I'm hoping to not get sent away tomorrow because of a silly mistake!

Hey all, I bought a new car from the North last week from a dealer. I have the full V5C form with just section 9 missing.

I noticed section 8 (Declaration) is blank, should the seller not have signed this along with me ?

Also which sections do I fill in for presenting to the VRT office , is it just sections 6 (new keeper), 8 (declaration) and 10 (new keeper details).

One last thing, is it ok to register for the VRT inspection straight away to just get all my documentation checked over and get approx price of VRT to be paid. The plan would be to re-schedule again a few week later (within the 30 days) to pay the VRT owed.

    Many thanks.

You dont fill anything in on the V5C form. Just hand it over blank as you got it from the seller.

You can come back and pay the figure at a later date as long as its within the 30 days.

I'm looking to buy a car from NI and I'm not sure how the VAT works. Do I just pay the NI purchase price in GBP including UK VAT and fill that in on the form when registering here, and that's the end of it?

Because the VAT rate is higher here, right? I don't need to pay any more VAT on the import here, do I?
