So, I'm thinking of upgrading my 159 in the next few months. I've been looking st something a little bigger as the family is starting to go that way!!

I'm looking at an A6 or a 5 series, ideally, with a budget of around 13k.

I'd love to hear feedback from anyone here who has owned one of the aforementioned; things like reliability, servicing costs, anything really!

I'm aware of the 5 series timing chain problem with the 520ds; to the best of my knowledge, I don't think this occurs with the 530ds, but I could be wrong here???

    I spotted this:

    https://www.usedcarsni.com/2009-BMW-5-Series-M-SPORT-A-192044532

I really like this. One of my bosses has one and he can't say enough good things about his.

With regards to A6s, I've found this:

    https://www.usedcarsni.com/2010-Audi-A6-S-LINE-LE-MANS-TDI-184904668

I've only started looking, and I have a bit of time, but all/any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers

That is a great example of the 5 series you linked. I'd be all over that one. I have the same model same wheels same spec in 2006 petrol.

530d is a seriously good engine too.

BMW E60 530d over an Audi A6 2.0 TDI all day for me. Took a few spins in a 530d like that and it was an excellent machine. That one looks very tidy and well specced too. 3.0 lite diesel engine in the E60 is the older M57 engine which doesn't suffer from timing chain problems.

Good stuff. I wasn't completely sure of the timing chain issue.

    Cheers for the info.

Beautiful E60, do you do the miles for a diesel? If not, a petrol 530i (m-sport of course) may offer slightly better value for 750euro tax. I pay (when I remember):) 1494 tax on an N52 engined 05 530i and struggle to think of alternatives for reasonable money.

I do and I dont. I do between 10 -12k miles a year, but we've used the better half's car for the family stuff all of the time.

My thing with this is, this would be a car that I'd aim to keep, for a minimum, 5 years, if not longer!

My newest worry is the whole diesel aspect. I feel that it could be ostracised in the next few budgets. It has me apprehensive!!

The F10 525D are a great car also. Have one myself.
If I had to pick between a e60 530d vs f10 525D I'd probably go for the F10 model as its the newer shape. The e60 Msports are gorgeous though I think.

Cheers! A good headache to have I suppose!!!

I am partial to the M Sport. Such a class looking car!

How do you find a general running costs?? Obviously, it's going to be more than my 159, just wondering ball park wise.

I had a manual 04 530d a few years back and used to be able to get in the high 40's on a long run. Lovely cars, definitely a contender for me next time. If you have buggies etc would you go for a touring? The 5 m sport touring is one nice looking car especially in carbon black.

It is funny to think when the E60 came out people thought it was fugly. I think the E60 m-sport is still one of the best looking cars on the road today.

    I couldn't agree more!

That's why I'm slightly more inclined to go for the older version over the newer shape F10.

The paintwork on the 525d looks way better than the 530d in those photos and the 525d is slightly better speced too. If you wanted you could always get the 525d mapped/tuned cheaply enough to give it similar performance to a stock 530d. The 525d passed it's MOT only the other day too which is somewhat more reassuring.

I don't think I'd pay a grand more for that particular 530d over the 525d.

My thinking exactly! I think the 525 is much more impressive, of the above examples!

    Cheers Baz!

Does it cost much to remap?

Also, for the VRT calculator, what exact example is this 525?

From my calculations, the 525 works out 2k cheaper overall! That's some difference!

Is the 525 effected by the 520 timing chain issue?

A remap should be around 300 to 400 euro.

It's under 525 on the calculator, then engine capacity is 2993 and then version is "D E60 M SPORT BUS EDITION".

That 2993 increases the VRT by 2k! I had it as 2493 by mistake. Any chance the VRT man will make the same mistake?? Doubtful!!!

Very unlikely as they go off the car's VIN.

It's a serious jump in price. It goes from being an 11k car to a 13k car.

Long as you are aware that the motor tax on them varies depending on the year and emissions. Ranges from €750 to €1200 afaik.

That particular car in the photo is also on UK plates and no mention of service history.

I looked at that advert again; something shady about it.

    Another one here:

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2010-xj-jag-sport-3-0d-auto/16249543

I was aware of the 750 tax, not the 1200!

Also, the VRT seems to be through the roof!

    Edit:

    This one is nice:

Seller has a number of cars for sale in the Breaking Repairables section too so be alert to the kind of cars that he might be dealing in.

    You're on the ball Bazz.

What do you think of the other one?

Probably out of my price range anyway
