Shouldn't be a problem to use the card in most ATMs. You might be charged a fee, this is pretty standard in US if you use an ATM that isn't operated by the card issuer.

It shouldn't be a problem, though the US is slowly catching up on banking technology so there's a chance on older machines you'll have to select 'credit' for it to go through.

Try to use actual banks ATM's if possible - You're going to be paying a fee for the transaction in the first place, but the random ones in shops can top that up to be a pretty substantial cost.

I would add that you should notify your card company that you will be travelling to the states. My card was rejected over there and I got a text regarding suspicous activity on my account, only took a phone call but it was hassle I did not need when I was trying to win back my money in Vegas.

+1 I never had to do this with my credit card which I estimate I have used in over 30 countries but I was in Chicago last year and having run out of cash at the end of my last night, I tried to use a (BoI) Visa debit card in McDonalds and it was rejected so I had to use the Mastercard instead.

Don't know if AIB allow you to do this online but for any BoI customers with a debit card reading this, you need to login to 365online, click on 'Manage Accounts', click 'Service Desk', click the arrow under the 'What can we do for you' banner and select 'Card Travel Notification'.

You should get a Revolut card.

AIB will let you add a travel note online or through the app.
I never had an issue using mine over there, saves you carrying lots of dollars also.

I travelled to the US and Central America in May and notified both of my banks of each country I would be using my cards in. Still had hassle and card rejected at the till when trying to pay for stuff and at ATM, not all the time but sometimes. Have a backup card if possible, I was lucky that I had a spare for emergencies.

There's usually a €150 a day limit on what you can take out in US on Irish debit cards.

    Since when?

Never had an issue taking $400+ out, but some atm machines have limits on all non usa cards. They are usually the independent machines in shops.

AIB do anyways. Their credit cards are fine but debit cards restricted.

Perhaps AIB only. They seem to have increased from €150 to €250 since chip and pin came in last year in US...
What is the daily ATM cash withdrawal limit on my Debit Card?

You can use your card for cash withdrawals from ATMs in the Republic of Ireland and worldwide (up to a daily limit of €600) where the Visa logo is displayed. Please note: at some ATMs abroad, particularly in non-European locations, the daily cash withdrawal limit may be reduced to €250 or less. Also local ATM limits may apply.

I've not experienced that. I'm with AIB, was working in NYC for 6 weeks in April/May of this year, and would withdraw $600 at a time, no issues.
